She’s achieved many things in racing, including back to back Cox Plate triumphs in the last two years, but on Tuesday morning at Randwick, Winx won her very first barrier trial.
The champion mare, who is on a 17-race winning streak over the past two years, settled third last in the opening 1000 metre heat of the morning, but improved steadily to be third on the home turn.
Hugh Bowman was in the saddle, as he has been throughout the hugely successful last two years, and presented her with an inside run and the grand mare stormed past her rivals, eventually winning by 0.8 of a length.
The mare looked brilliant in her second barrier trial at Randwick over the last three weeks. She came third on July 24 in a 900 metre trial, which was her first run after a 15-week Autumn-Winter spell.
The final time was just under a minute for the 1000 metre journey, taking 59.98 seconds to beat Blue Diamond stakes runner-up Pariah with a narrow margin to Happy Clapper in third place.
The Warwick Stakes is the first assignment for the people’s champion this campaign on August 19 at Randwick. She won this group two event last year, by a huge margin of three and a half lengths.
She’s also booked to go around at the George Main Stakes on September 16, where she is at the skinny odds of $1.15, but the ultimate goal for the Chris Waller trained superstar is a third successive Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 28.
The plan after that could be the Emirates Stakes at the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which if it happens, will be the Queen of the track’s first start at Flemington.
