Lynn-less Heat look to double up on Scorchers

Tue, Jan 10, 11:42am by Senior Writer

Preview: Brisbane Heat v Perth Scorchers

Date and Time: Wednesday January 11, 7:10pm AEDT

Venue: The Gabba

TV: Channel 10

The Scorchers have had six days to reflect on the hammering they received from the Heat at the WACA last week, and their plans for revenge have been dealt a particularly strong hand by the Australian selectors of all people.

Chris Lynn has been the supremely dominant batsman of BBL 06, with his stunning 98, which included 11 sixes, propelling him into the national one-day squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan.

It’s a strange situation when the player everybody wants to watch in the BBL finds himself playing for his country in front of fewer people than if he was representing the Heat, but until BBL finds its own dedicated window away from international cricket, something it deserves on popularity alone, it is something we have to put up with.

It is certainly a boost for the Scorchers, who go into this match as equal $1.90 favourites with the Heat, despite that loss last week and the fact this one is played at Brisbane. In fact, Lynn’s likely absence for the next four matches, has seen the Scorchers firm back into title favourite at $4 with the Heat at $4.33.

The top-order is crucial to the Scorchers chances’ here. Both Michael Klinger and Ian Bell failed in that last match, leaving Mitch Marsh, and to a lesser extent his brother Shaun, to do much of the run scoring.

Considering he bats four, Mitch has done a great job to be fourth on the overall BBL runs list at the moment with 210 at an average of 70 and a strike rate north of 150.  But he. like Lynn, will be with the Australian squad. Openers Klinger and Shaun Marsh are favourites at $3.75, but the latter doesn’t yet look back in the sort of touch to dominate matches after returning from a long injury layoff.

The Heat’s bowling line-up has been tremendously consistent this campaign, and all five bowlers caused the Scorchers some headaches in Perth. With Sammy Badree out for the series with a hamstring injury, youngster Mitch Swepson stepped up and his 2-27 was vital in restricting the Scorchers to a manageable score,

English paceman Tymal Mills is likely to make his debut for the Heat here having been drafted in for Badree. He looked good taking 10 wickets at an economy rate of just 6.61 an over in the recent NZ Super Smash Series and is $4 equal second pick with Ben Cutting to take to most wickets for the Heat. Mark Steketee is $3.75 favourite, with Swepson value at $4.50.

The Heat may be without Lynn, but still pack plenty of punch in the batting department. Skipper Brendon McCullum hit a 31-ball 50 in that last match and has 198 runs for the series to date. He is $2.88 favourite to top score.

Fellow opener Jimmy Peirson has had a fair series to date with 109 runs, but needs to step up. He is $4.50 to top score while Alex Ross ($4.33), who started the BBL with a 64 against the strikers, has made just 22 runs in four games since.

The Scorchers’ bowling attack were pounded against the Heat, with all but Ashton Turner being hit for at or above 10 an a over. David Willey has been their leading wicket-taker with seven, but he’s been called up to the England squad, replaced by Tim Bresnan.

The pressure is firmly on Townsville-raised Mitch Johnson to get the job done here in his home state. He has five wickets in four games but has gone for 8.35 an over. He is $4 second pick to get the most wickets for the visitors with AJ Tye, who also has five wickets, at $3.75.

This is a very difficult match to predict. Lynn is an enormous loss, but the Scorchers also lose Mitch Marsh and are light on for in-form bowlers in Willey’s absence. It comes down to whether McCullum can fire with the bat and get some support. I think the experienced Kiwi can do exactly that.
