Falcons our tip in what shapes as an epic Superbowl

Sat, Feb 4, 10:11am by Head Editor

Preview: NFL Super Bowl: New England Patriots v Atlanta Falcons

Date and Time: Monday February 6, 10:30am AEDT

Venue: NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas

TV: Live on ESPN

Here it is. The biggest game of the year – both on the field and in terms of betting. It should also be an entertaining game with a matchup – unlike last season’s showpiece – between two of the best offences in the league.

While most of the attention has been on Tom Brady, which is fair enough considering he is probably the best of all time, Matt Ryan’s Falcons offence have been outstanding all season.

That sentiment seems to continue when you look at how both teams are viewed. Atlanta flew under the radar for most of the season, while New England are one of the most beloved (and hated) teams in any professional sports league in America and never seem to spend a day out of the headlines.

Onto the all-important betting front and the Patriots will enter the showdown as favourites but there has been late money for the Falcons. New England opened the week at $1.61 but have now drifted out to $1.65.

The Falcons were $2.38 on Monday and are now into $2.31. The line is at a field goal and the total points market is set at 58.5.

Unsurprisingly, Brady tops the MVP market at $1.91 with his Falcons counterpart Ryan right behind him at $2.75. Falcons wide-receiver Julio Jones is at $12 while his opposing receiver Julian Edelman rounds out the top four at $21.

Historically, the MVP goes to the quarterback with 27 wins in the 50 Superbowls played to date. A running back has won the award seven times and a wide receiver six. Last season, Bronco Von Miller become the fourth linebacker to hold the trophy.

Brady has won the award, which is voted by fans during the game and by a panel of 16 football writers and broadcasters after the game, three times and who’s to say that Captain America won’t salute for his fourth here.

Onto the fun stuff with our friends at OddsShark’s video of the prop betting market for the big match.

The Patriots are going for their fifth Super Bowl title and their second in three years while the Falcons are appearing in just their second Super Bowl ever, having lost to the Broncos in John Elway’s send-off season in 1999.

The total match points market is set as 58.5 and with both teams boasting outstanding offences, you think that it would be covered, but don’t be so sure. If we were to reach 59 points, it would be the highest total ever in the history of the Super Bowl.

New England haven’t faced a quarterback that ranks in the top 10 in passer rating this entire season, and Russell Wilson, probably the best signal caller the Patriots came up against, led the Seahawks to a 31-24 victory at Gillette Stadium.

I’m expecting Ryan – who has the NFL’s top passer rating to give the Patriots the biggest challenge that they have had all year. I was going to take the Falcons to cover the line but just so I’m not sitting on the fence for the biggest game of the season, I’m taking them to win their first ever Super Bowl.

Should the Falcons salute, they will add to the long line of drought breakers in the past 12 months.
