The UFC returns to Scotland this weekend for a Fight Night event headlined by a welterweight bout between Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson and Argentinian Santiago Ponizibbio.
Nelson has hovered around the top 10 for most of his career, and needs to win here to continue his surge toward a title shot. It won’t be easy though, against the underrated Ponizibbio.
The Icelandic fighter is at $1.57, and should be too strong. He has the upper hand on the mat, and that is an area where the Argentinian, who’s at $2.20, needs to work on. Nelson is also a capable striker.
The women’s strawweight battle between Cynthia Calvillo and Joanne Calderwood is even more lopsided. Scottish fighter Calderwood will have the crowd on her side, but the bookmakers have installed her as a big underdog, at $2.80.
Calvillo is a Muay-Thai based fighter, and will have the edge in grappling, but Calderwood does have the experience to see this fight through to the end, so we’re taking this bout to go over 2.5 rounds in our multi.
Before Calderwood does battle with Calvillo, the pride of Scotland will fight in the lightweight division when Stevie Ray, who hails from Kirkcaldy, which is just 90 kilometres from where this fight will take place.
The bookies can’t split Ray and his opponent, American Paul Felder, they are both at $1.83. It’s little wonder why the betting market is so tight, given how evenly matched these fighters are.
Ray is a well-rounded fighter, and will want to grapple with Felder here because his rival is a versatile striker with good power and clean technique. I’m leaning towards the local, as he is coming off wins against experienced lightweights Ross Pearson and Joe Lauzon.
