The main event of this weekend’s UFC event sees Long Island native Chris Weidman battle it out with Californian Kelvin Gastelum in the middleweight division.
This event is the first that the UFC has hosted on Long Island, and while Weidman will have all the support in the stands, he’s a $2.53 underdog, having lost three bouts in a row.
Gastelum is a $1.52 favourite, having beaten Vitor Belfort in his last outing, but given that these two fighters are both wrestlers, this one could easily turn into a grappling match, which could well see this one go the distance.
We give the edge to Weidman’s striking over Gastelum’s, so the local looks value here to get a much-needed win.
The co-main event is a featherweight contest between Dennis Bermudez and Darren Elkins, which will also have a local feel, with Burmudez hailing from Saugerties, New York.
This time the local is the favourite, installed as a $1.43 chance to defeat Elkins, in what the favourite hopes will be a kickboxing match, where he will have the advantage.
Elkins will not be a pushover though, he’s coming into this one with momentum, having knocked out top prospect Mirsad Bektic.
Bermudez runs with Long Island MMA, a blossoming gym that has produced some very strong fighters, and he should be too strong.
Patrick Cummins ($2.53) is a big outsider in his light heavyweight showdown against Gian Villante ($1.52), mainly due to the fact that aside from wrestling, he doesn’t have too much else in his kit bag.
Villante is a former College American football player, with good athleticism and explosiveness, which should give him the edge.
Kicking off the four-fight main card will be the bantamweight bout between
