Garbine Muguruza’s brilliant run at Wimbledon has continued all the way to the final, dropping only two games against Magdalena Rybarikova in the semi-final.
While she is aiming to win her first title in her second final, standing on the other side of the net will be five-time winner Venus Williams, who’s back in the final for the first time since 2009.
The American is priced at $1.98 to become the oldest winner of the women’s event in 109 years. Muguruza is $1.83, having beaten number one seed Angelique Kerber and two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the final four.
Local hope Johanna Konta couldn’t ride the wave of support to a win over Williams, she did push the veteran in the opening set, but a couple of ill-timed errors at the back end of the first set saw her lose the momentum.
Number six seed Williams sealed the 6-4, 6-2 win in 73 minutes, which sees her qualify for a ninth final at the Old England Club, from 20 appearances.
Despite the loss, the Brit ends her grass court season with a record of 19-3, which is likely to see her ranking move up into the top five.
This final is set to be the first time that these two players have met on grass, with Venus winning all three times on a hard-court surface, before Muguruza got a win back earlier this year, at the Rome Masters, on clay.
Muguruza, who won the French Open last year, was in scintillating form when it mattered in the semi-final. The 23-year-old played with patience and precision, and claiming 19 of 25 points when she came to the net.
The Spaniard lost to Serena in the final here in 2015, and now must get past her older sister Venus in this decider, but judging by her brilliant form this fortnight, where she has not dropped a set, I can’t tip against her.
