AFL Round 21 Betting Odds

Wed, Aug 14, 8:49pm by Clarinda Campbell

2013 AFL Round 21 Betting PreviewAUD $100 Free AFL Bet:

The Magpies threw the race for the premiership wide open with an eye catching defeat of the Swans in Round 20. There’s now only three matches left of the regular season and there’s a bit of jostling amongst teams for a top four spot. As we approach the finals, Round 21 will see three detailed betting previews.

A few of the best bets came off last week (Tigers 1-39 at $2.30, Cats 1-39 at $2.30 and Dockers -72.5 at $1.92). Here is a look at the opening odds and some suggested bets for Round 21:

Hawthorn Hawks ($1.60) vs Collingwood Magpies ($2.35)

7:50pm, Friday 16 August 2013 at the MCG

This match should set the MCG alight. The Hawks are perched atop the ladder and the Magpies comprehensively defeated the form team of the competition last week. This is one of three matches that will be subject to a more detailed betting preview.

Premiership / Outrights

The Hawks have remained steady this week with their prices unchanged from last week. They are the favourites to make the grand final, currently at odds of $1.77 and are $3.25 to win the flag with

Collingwood has had support this week to win the flag after their defeat of the 2012 Premiers. They have come into $11.00 from $17.00 with They’ve also had support in the grand final market. They have halved their price to $4.50 to play in the big one.

Richmond Tigers ($1.34) vs Carlton Blues ($3.25)

1:45pm, Saturday 17 August 2013 at the MCG

Tigers supporters are appearing everywhere now their team has shown they will be competitive come the business end of the year. Meanwhile, Carlton fans were left reeling after a loss against the Bulldogs last week. This match will also be subject to a further detailed betting preview.

Premiership / Outrights

The Tigers have come in slightly in the market to make the grand final at $8.50. They have remained steady at $21 to win the premiership.

Port Adelaide Power ($1.21) vs Gold Coast Suns ($4.40)

1:40pm, Saturday 10 August 2013 at AAMI Stadium

As expected, Port were defeated by the Cats at the Cats home ground last week. However, they were not disgraced. They were down a fair margin and managed to pull it back to 25 points by the time of the final siren. The problem with Port, and it’s something that has happened most of the season, is that they allow the opposition a good start. There’s no doubting their ability to dig in when the going gets tough and that’s why they are in the top eight. However, as finals approach, they have to try and stay with teams from the start or they will be knocked out in the early finals rounds if they make it.

The Suns also had an expected victory over the Demons last week although It wasn’t as convincing as expected and they were challenged for the better part of the match.

If Port win this match, they will almost seal their top 8 spot. If they lose they potentially open the door for the Eagles and Blues if those teams can win their last three matches of the year.

Power: $1.21
Suns: $4.40

Power 1-39: $2.20 with
Power 40+: $2.40
Suns 1-39: $4.90
Suns 40+: $23.00

Power -28.5: $1.92
Suns +28.5: $1.92

Best Bet

The margin market has been pretty successful in recent weeks for best bets and I am looking to that market in this match. The Suns have been competitive for the most part of the season and play a fast brand of footy. Port will win but they need to contain their slow starts. I think the Suns will start well, but Port will win by 1-39.

Premiership / Outrights

Port Adelaide have remained steady in outright markets. They are still $67 to win the premiership and $26 to make the grand final.

Essendon Bombers ($2.85) vs North Melbourne Kangaroos ($1.42)

4:40pm, Saturday 17 August 2013 at Etihad Stadium

The AFL is preparing to drop a bomb on Essendon’s season as the final outcome of the ASADA investigation becomes known. The drugs cloud has been hanging over them all year and it looks as though it is really starting to affect their season, with another big loss last week to the Eagles. They have slipped right down the ladder into seventh position. It’s muted they won’t be playing the finals this year if the AFL hands down its sentence shortly. This may open the door for the Eagles or Blues to move into the eight.

North Melbourne have opened up as favourites to defeat Essendon in the head to head betting and this is largely due to the current issues at Essendon. The Kangaroos were back to their disappointing best last week, defeated narrowly by the Crows. The Kangaroos tear your hair out as they have ability but struggle under pressure. Their finals hunt is over for the year but they will still want to win for their fans.

Bombers: $2.85
Kangaroos: $1.92 with

Bombers 1-39: $3.60
Bombers 40+: $13.00
Kangaroos 1-39: $2.25
Kangaroos 40+: $3.30

Bombers +17.5: $1.92
Kangaroos -17.5: $1.92

Best Bet

The H2H market appeals here, so I will be placing a bet on the Kangaroos in this market. The odds on offer a good and all you have to worry about is the Kangaroos winning. The Bombers are in turmoil and will struggle to bounce back after two weeks of poor form and a tumultuous time in the press.

Premiership / Outrights

Essendon are $41.00 to make the grand final and $67.00 to win the flag. They have fast lost favour with punters as this time last week they were $17 to make the grand finals and $34 to take the premiership.

Brisbane Lions ($1.02) vs Greater Western Sydney ($13.00)

7:40pm, Saturday 17 August 2013 at the Gabba

The Lions were gallant in their loss against the Tigers last week and will be too good for the Giants this week at home. The Giants were handed a 113 point drubbing by the men in purple last week and they won’t be expected to worry the Lions. The Lions should win convincingly.

Lions: $1.02
Giants: $13.00

Lions 1-39: $4.10
Lions 40+: $1.27
Giants 1-39: $14.00
Giants 40+: $151.00

Lions -62.5: $1.92 with
Giants +62.5: $1.92

Best Bet

The Lions do have a good attack when they are “on” and they will want to make a statement against the Giants. They are just as capable as most of the other teams that have posted big margins over the Giants and have the ability to score 11 more goals than the Giants. There is even talk that key scorer for the Giants, Jeremy Cameron, will be rested for this match. Therefore, a bet in the handicap market is recommended.

West Coast Eagles ($2.55) vs Geelong Cats ($1.50)

5:40pm, Saturday 17 August 2013 at Patersons Stadium

The Eagles demolished the Bombers last week and if they can win their last three of the year they are still a mathematical chance of being in the finals. It also all depends on what the AFL does with Essendon. Either way, this is an important match for both sides and will be the subject of a further detailed betting preview. The Cats have climbed back into second and will be looking to get some away form under their belt.

Premiership / Outrights

The Cats are still $3.75 to win the flag. They have moved slightly from $1.90 to $2.00 to make the grand final.

Melbourne Demons ($15.00) vs Fremantle Dockers ($1.01)

1:10pm, Sunday 18 August 2013 at the MCG

The hapless Demons will provide no match for the Dockers in this game. Fremantle handed the Demons a 90 point defeat earlier this season and they are shaping up to finish in the top four, possibly the top two, by seasons end.

Demons: $15.00
Dockers: $1.01

Demons 1-39: $17.00
Demons 40+: $151.00
Dockers 1-39: $5.00
Dockers 40+: $1.17

Demons +68.5: $1.92
Dockers -68.5: $1.92 with

Best Bet

Based purely on the result earlier this year, the Dockers should cover the spread here in the handicap betting market.

Premiership / Outrights

The Dockers have had support to make the grand final, moving into $2.40. They have also been supported in the premiership betting, now at odds of $5.50.

Sydney Swans ($1.02) vs St Kilda Saints ($14.00)

3:20pm, Sunday 18 August 2013 at the SCG

The Swans put in a poor effort last week, succumbing to the Magpies pressure and losing by a sizeable 29 points. This is their last “easy” match of the season and will be looking to fine tune the areas they were out played in last week. In the final two weeks of the season they have to play Geelong and Hawthorn. They need to win this game to maintain a top four position.

The Saints have lost their last seven matches and look to be clearly outclassed here. They kept the loss to 16 points last time the sides met (over in New Zealand). The Swans have improved as the season has gone on and they have won four of the last five against the Saints, so they will be winning here.

Swans: $1.02
Saints: $14.00

Swans 1-39: $3.60
Swans 40+: $1.34 with
Saints 1-39: $16.00
Saints 40+: $146.00

Swans -58.5: $1.92
Saints +58.5: $1.92

Best Bet

The 40+ margin betting market is a good option for those looking for a bet to place in their multi.

Premiership / Outrights

The Swans have moved out in betting in both the market to make the grand final and the market to win the flag. They are $2.15 and $4.25 in the respective markets.

Western Bulldogs ($2.12) vs Adelaide Crows ($1.72)

4:40pm, Sunday 18 August 2013 at Etihad Stadium

The Bulldogs made plenty happy last week, defeating the maligned Carlton Blues by 28 points. The Crows also come into this match with a 9 point victory over the Kangaroos.

The tail end of the Bulldogs season has been encouraging. If there was to be an upset this week, I am tipping it will be this match. The sides are 2 apiece from the last four matches. The Crows did defeat the Bulldogs by 52 points back in Round 4 this year, but the Bulldogs are playing ten times better than they were then.

Bulldogs: $2.12 with
Crows: $1.72

Bulldogs 1-39: $2.75
Bulldogs 40+: $8.00
Crows 1-39: $2.35
Crows 40+: $5.00

Bulldogs +5.5: $1.92
Crows -5.5: $1.92

Best Bet

I am going for the upset here and taking the $2.12 on offer in the head to head market for the Bulldogs to win.
