Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds Preview

Cincinnati sends Edison Volquez and his 2-0 record to the mound. He has a 5.82 ERA and has had a control problem to work on. In the first inning of the season he gave up nine runs but from that point on he has been  a good pitcher. His career numbers vs. the Pirates show him with a 1-0 record and a 2.32 ERA in his five starts. Pittsburgh starts right-hander Jeff Karstens and sends him to the mound for this first start of the season to go with three relief appearances on the young season. He has been a starter in his career but has a dismal 10-23 record with a 4.92 ERA. In 2010 he had 3 wins and 10 losses. Lifetime the Reds have pounded him as he has an 0-4 record with a 6.26 ERA in the seven games he has started against them.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Chicago White Sox Preview

A great pitching match-up as the Angels send Dan Haren and his 3-0 mark to face the White Sox Mark Buehrle and a 1-0 start to eth season.  Haren is coming off a one-hit shutout of Cleveland on April 12, but he has been outstanding all season, allowing only two earned runs in 24 2/3 innings while striking out 21 batters. He has not faced the White Sox since 2007, but he has past success – current Chicago hitters are 19-for-93 (.204) against Haren.  Buhrle was shaky in his first two starts before throwing eight shutout innings against Oakland on April 11 (a game the bullpen would lose for him 2-1). The Angels are batting a combined .313 against Buehrle, led by outfielders Bobby Abreu with his 9 hits in 15 at bats  and Vernon Wells who has exploded with 19 hits in 38 at bats along with a home run and eight RBI’s. The southpaw has not pitched against Los Angeles since 2009 where he earned a loss in 7 innings of work.
Texas Rangers at New York Yankees Preview

Texas sends Alexi Ogando to the mound with his perfect 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. He is one of the few pleasant surprises in Texas’ starting rotation that is second in the majors with a 2.63 ERA. The former reliever has not been scored upon through his first two big-league starts, allowing just four hits and striking out eight in 13 innings.. In his career he is 1-0 against the Yankees, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against them last season. Sabathia has been almost as effective for New York, despite being winless through three starts. He allowed one earned run on nine hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings last Sunday in a loss to Boston. Sabathia is 8-3 with a 4.29 ERA in 14 starts all time against the Rangers.
