In the National Basketball Association, two teams from the Eastern Conference will get together in South Beach. The Miami Heat will host the New York Knicks in a game between two potential postseason foes. The Heat are currently the second seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Knicks are a game ahead of Philadelphia for the 7th seed.
The Heat hold a 2-1 season lead over the Knicks. On December 17th in Miami, the Heat came away with a blow-out win over the Knicks; 113-91 behind 32 points from LeBron James. Then again on December 28th, the Knicks hosted the Heat at the Garden with Miami once again coming away with a win; 106-98, with Dwyane Wade pouring in 40 points. The Knicks won their only game of the series on January 27th at home, 93-88. This is the first time these two teams have played with Carmelo Anthony in the picture.
Miami Heat Overview
The Miami Heat have been the talk of the NBA most of the season. After the LeBron James announcement to take his talents to South Beach, evey Heat loss is magnified. Miami is just 1/2 game behind the Celtics for the top record in the Eastern Conference. The Heat are pulling away at the top of the Southeast Division, ahead of both Orlando and Atlanta. Miami, after losing to Chicago on Thursday night, came away with a win over Washington on Friday night.
LeBron James in his first season away from Cleveland is scoring 26.2 points per game, which is near the top of the leaders in the league. Miami as a team is scoring 102.3 points per game. The Heat rank sixth in the league defensively, allowing just 94.4 points per game.
New York Knicks Overview
During the All Star break, the New York Knicks acquired Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets. Before the trade the Knicks were the second leading scoring team in the league, behind only the Nuggets. It appears New York will take over that statistic at some point during the season. The Knicks now have high scorers in both Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. Anthony played his college ball in New York – at Syracuse.
New York took a frustrating six point loss at Cleveland on Friday night. The loss sent the Knicks to just a full game ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers for second place in the Atlantic Division, and also sixth overall in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks would start the postseason at Chicago if the playoffs were to start today.
This should be a fun game on Sunday Night. The premiere game in the NBA features some of the games best stars. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony could beat any group of five in the league.
The points will be a plenty. Part of that is because the Knicks play poor defense. Miami will not mind a high scoring game with their stars. The line for this game Miami -8.5. We look for this to stay relatively close for awhile, but Miami to run away late. Look for the Heat to cover 8.5 and win the game.
Our pick: Take the Miami Heat -8.5 over the New York Knicks. Bet the Heat at Sportsbet!
