Game: Brigham Young Cougars vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs
Date/Time: Sunday March 20th, 2011 / 11:45am AEST
The Brigham Young Cougars and Gonzaga Bulldogs will get together in the third round, as part of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. The Cougars come into the game as the third seed in the Southeast region, while the Bulldogs are the 11 seed. This game will be played in Denver, Colorado.
Brigham Young Overview:
The Brigham Young Cougars knocked out the Wofford Terriers in their first game of the NCAA tournament. During the regular season, the Cougars went 31-4 and won the regular season conference crown within the Mountain West Conference. In the conference tournament, after beating them twice in the regular season, the Cougars were downed by the Aztecs of San Diego State. Brigham Young’s other losses this season came to UCLA and New Mexico twice.
Jimmer Fredette not only leads the team, but the entire country in scoring. The guard for the Cougars scored 28.5 points per game. Brandon Davies was the second leading scorer, and top rebounder, but was dismissed from the team for violating team rules back in February. The Cougars are in their 26th NCAA tournament, with a record of 12-28.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs, led by head coach Mark Few picked up an upset win over Big East representative St. John’s on Thursday night. The Bulldogs with their win extended their winning streak to 10 straight. After trying with St. Mary’s for the regular season title out of the West Coast Conference, the Bulldogs beat them in the conference tournament title game to get the automatic bid. Gonzaga before their 10 game winning streak started did not appear to be heading to the tournament.
Stephen Gray and Robert Sacre are the leaders offensively for Gonzaga. The two combine for 26.3 points per game, and also grab over 10 rebounds per game. Gonzaga finished the regular season ranked 23rd in total offense, as they scored 76.7 points per game. The Bulldogs are making their 14th trip to the NCAA tournament. Despite winning 16 tournament games, the Bulldogs have never been to the Final Four.
Brigham Young/Gonzaga Pick:
This has the makings for the best game on Saturday. Both of these teams have gotten a huge fan base during the season. Fredette is an absolute stud, but you know Coach Few is going to have an answer for him. Look for Gonzaga to try to bang the ball inside. Despite their seeds, Gonzaga is a small favorite. Despite being without Davies, we are picking the Brigham Young Cougars to win this game.
