The defending NCAA Men’s Basketball champion will head out west to defend their title. After blasting through the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Duke Blue Devils are the top seed in the region. The Blue Devils will certainly be battle tested heading out a long way from home. Some other teams in the region will have a closer drive, but rest assured, Blue Devil nation will represent. Let’s take a look at the second round match-ups in the West region.
The top seed Blue Devils will take on Hampton in the first round. As mentioned before, a 16 has never beat a 1 seed, and Coach K will see to it, his team is not the first. The winner of that game will take ont he 8/9 winner between Big Ten representative Michigan and SEC, Tennessee. Michigan won a game over Illinois in the Big Ten tournament to seemingly get then into the big dance.
The second seed in the West is the Aztecs of San Diego State. Many experts felt the Aztecs were a 3 or 4, but after beating Brigham Young in the Mountain West title game, they moved to a 2. The Aztecs two losses came to Brigham Young. They will take on Northern Colorado in the first round. In the 7/10 game, the Temple Owls will take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. This game has all the makings for a first to 50 wins battle. These two teams love to slow it down and make it a low possession game.
The third seed in the West belongs to the red-hot Connecticut Huskies. Jim Boeheim, Kimba Walker and company did the unthinkable, winning five games in five days. The Huskies beat a string of Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Louisville. They will take on the Bison of Bucknell in their first game. THe winner of that game will get the winner of the Cincinnati/Missouri game. As the 6 seed, the Bearcats have alot of work to do, to slow down the fast paced offense of the Tigers.
The fourth seed belongs to the Texas Longhorns, while the Arizona Wildcats are the #5. Texas will take on Oakland, who is battle tested, with many non-conference powerhouses on their slate. The Wildcats will battle with the Memphis Tigers, in what could be one of the best first round games.
Duke is 13 to 10 favorite to win the West Region. This is a tough bet, because Coach K’s team has showed signs of not being able to hit the big shot consistently this season. San Diego State is 15 to 4. Steve Fisher’s team is good, but out of the Mountain West – not sure they have the experience to get out of the region. The best bet of the region is the Connecticut Huskies at 5 to 1. We are betting the Connecticut Huskies to win the West region with 5 to 1 odds.
