With the NCAA tourament starting, we want to give you some breakdown of some of the second round games. The region is topped out by the Ohio State Buckeyes, with North Carolina, Syracuse, Kentucky, West Virginia, Xavier, Washington, George Mason, Villanova, Georgia, Marquette, UAB/Clemson, Princeton, Indiana State, Long Island, Texas San Antonio/Alabama State.
Many people have claimed that this region is the toughest in the tournament. The Buckeyes are the #1 overall team, and winners of both the regular season and conference tournament. North Carolina, Kentucky, Xavier and Washington were also either regular season or conference tournament champions in one of the big conferences.
A few of the first round games: Ohio State will take on the winner of the play-in game between Texas San Antonio and Alabama State. The Buckeyes will be sure to have their act together, to avoid being the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed. Jared Sullinger, David Lighty and crew will not have an easy task after that. If the Buckeyes win, they will take on either George Mason or Villanova. While the Wildcats of Villanova struggled down the stretch, this game has the makings for an upset watch.
The second seeded North Carolina Tar heels will get Long Island in their first round game. The Tar Heels had a rough ACC tournament, struggling in their first two games, and then getting blown out by Duke in the title game. The Tar Heels, if they can survive round one will take on the winner of Washington/Georgia. Washington won the Pac-Ten tournament on a last second shot over Arizona, while Georgia comes in as a surprise entry into the field.
The third seed in the East belongs to the Syracuse Orange. Jim Boeheim and his crew finished third in the vaunted Big East. The Orange were unable to slow down Connecticut in the Semifinals of the Big East tournament. They will get Missouri Valley winner Indiana State in the first round. The winner of that game will get either Xavier or Marquette. If Syracuse and Marquette win, that would set up a Big East tilt.
The fourth seeded Kentucky Wildcats are young, but playing much better. Kentucky won the SEC title over Florida. They will take on the Princeton Tigers out of the Ivy League. The winner of that will face West Virginia, UAB or Clemson. UAB and Clemson play in a play-in game, with the winner taking on Coach Huggins and the Mountaineers.
Odds have been released for the teams to win the East region. Of course the Buckeyes are the top team with 7 to 5 odds. North Carolina comes in listed at 9 to 2, while Syracuse and Kentucky are 4 to 1 odds. Washington comes in fifth according to odds, with 10 to 1, while West Virginia is listed at 20 to 1, Marquette 35 to 1 Villanova 40 to 1, Xavier 50 to 1, and George Mason 75 to 1. The Buckeyes are the sexy choice, but with our money, we like Syracuse at 4 to 1 to win the East region.
