In the third round of the NCAA tournament, the Florida Gators will host the UCLA Bruins. The winner of this game will move onto the Sweet 16. Florida is coming off a blow-out win over UC Santa Barbara, while the Bruins struggled late in the game, but held on to edge the Michigan State Spartans. Florida is the 2nd seed in the Southeast region, while the Bruins are the 7th seed.
Florida Gators Overview:
The Florida Gators had a solid season, but fell short in the SEC tournament. The Gators got to the title game, but then lost to rival Kentucky. The Gators won their last 10 out of 12 before entering the tournament. Florida is in their 15th NCAA tournament, with a 29-13 record. The Gators have been to the Final Four on four difference occassions.
Chandler Parsons was the SEC player of the year, scoring nearly 14 points per game, and also ripping down 8 rebounds per game. The Gators ranked 98th in the country scoring 71.5 points per game. Billy Donovan has been the Gators coach through the back-to-back title years of 2006 and 2007. Florida finished the season ranked #15 in the Associated Press poll.
UCLA Bruins Overview:
The UCLA Bruins finished second in the Pac-Ten conference, behind the Arizona Wildcats. The Bruins were downed byOregon in the conference tournament, but were still able to manage a 7 seed. The Bruins are one of the most historic schools within the NCAA tournament. UCLA is playing in it’s 43rd tournament, and are just two wins away from 100 wins in the NCAA tournament. The Bruins have reached the Final Four 18 times in school history.
The Bruins are led in scoring by Reeves Nelson and Malcom Lee. The two are scoring nearly 27 points per game combined, while Nelson is the top rebounder with 9.0 per game. UCLA has 7 of their 10 losses this season to teams that made the NCAA tournament field of 68.
Florida/UCLA Pick and Prediction:
This game is a battle between two contrasting styles. Billy Donovan and his Gators will want to get up and down the floor and take as many shots as they can. The Bruins would love this game to be a slowed down defensive slug fest. Florida has better athletes, but the Bruins have shown the ability to compensate with intelligence on the court. Look for this game to come down to the wire.
