Many people feel the Southeast region is the weakest of the four in the NCAA tournament. While we agree that the Pittsburgh Panthers are the worst of the four #1’s, we certainly are not pitting it as a bad region. This region has some historically solid NCAA tournament teams. Florida won back-to-back titles not too long ago, Bo Ryan and Wisconsin have won somne big games, UCLA has the most NCAA titles, Butler made the finals last season, Michigan State always has a tournament run, and the all time favorite NCAA cinderella team Gonzaga is the 11 seed! Let’s take a look at the region:
Despite not winning a Big East tournament game, the Pittsburgh Panthers still garnered a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Panthers will play the winner of the play-in game between UNC-Asheville and Arkansas-Little Rock. If the Panthers win, their second round game will not be a walk in the park. The 8th seeded Butler Bulldogs will take on a veteran Old Dominion squad. Either team has the chance of knocking off Pittsburgh.
The second seed in the region has some tournament history. Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators won the SEC regular season, but were unable to beat Kentucky in the tournament. The Gators will take on UCSB in their first game. The winner of that game will take on either the UCLA Bruins or the Michigan State Spartans. Wow, what history in that game. That region of four is loaded with some NCAA past times.
The third seed in the Southeast goes to the Mountain West Conference regular season champion Brigham Young Cougars. Jimmer Fredette may be the most exciting player in the tournament, as he has put up as many as 50 points in a game this season. The Cougars lost to San Diego State in the conference tournament title game. They will look to bounce back against Wofford in their first game. Steve Lavin and his St. John’s Storm had a surprisingly solid season, and will look to win a tournament game or two. Their first game will be against a Gonzaga team that has played very well as of late.
In the 4/13 game, the Wisconsin Badgers will take on Belmont. Bo Ryan and his Badgers had a horrible offensive performance against Penn State, but many of the experts remember back to the Ohio State game. Wisconsin can score points. The 5/12 game features the Kansas State Wildcats, who have Jacob Pullen, against the 30-3 Utah State Aggies. Kansas State’s toughest game could be their first round game!
Pittsburgh is 7 to 4 to win this region. We do not feel the Panthers are a good value. Jamie Dixon’s team has been good this season, winning their conference, but we feel too many battle tested teams in their way in this region. Florida is 10 to 3, which is a pretty decent bet. Pay $10, win $30 on the Gators. Brigham Young is 7 to 1 – while Freddette is good, a one man show cannot win four games in March. Kansas State is 10 to 1 – this is our favorite bet. Bet $10 and win #100. The Wildcats have been playing well, and Jacob Pullen, along with his crew can get hot in a hurry. This is our favorite bet of the region.
