Date/Time: Sunday March 20th, 2011 / 9:15am AEST
The Richmond Spiders will take on the Morehead State Eagles in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Both of these teams are coming off upsets in the second round. Richmond comes in as the 12 seed, while the Eagles are the 13th seed. Richmond beat the Vanderbilt Commodores, while Morehead State was able to beat regional foe Louisville on a buzzer beater. The winner of this game will take on the winner of the four-some between Kansas, UNLV, Illinois and Boston U.
Richmond Spiders Overview:
The Richmond Spiders have been red-hot as of late, winning the Atlantic Ten tournament over Dayton. The Spiders sport a non-conference win over the Purdue Boilermakers, which is their biggest win of the season. The Spiders have won 12 of their last 13 games, with their last loss coming on February 17th at Temple. Richmond during the regular season finished third in the Atlantic Ten, behind Xavier and Temple. The Spiders were on the bubble heading into the A-10 tournament, but stamped no doubt into the selection committee’s mind.
Richmond is scoring 70.2 points per game. Justin Harper has been the main cog for the Spiders offense all season. Harper is scoring 17.9 points per game, and also grabbing 7 rebounds per game. Richmond shot the ball nearly 47% on the season, which ranked in the top 50 in the country. This is the Spiders 15th NCAA tournament game, as they have won six to this point.
Morehead State Eagles Overview:
Morehead State went into the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the second seed, and beat Tennessee Tech in the conference title game. The win extended a streak of winning 12 out of their last 13 games. The Eagles lone loss during that streak was to Murray State. Morehead State is 5-7 in NCAA tournament games. This is the 6th time the Eagles have been in the tournament.
Kenneth Faried and Demonte Harper are the main studs for the Eagles. Faried is scoring 17.6 points per game and grabbing 14.5 rebounds per game. Harper is also scoring in double figues, while grabbing just 5 rebounds per game. The Eagles scored just shy of 70 points per game, offensively.
Richmond/Morehead State Pick:
Who would have thought these two teams would be playing for the right to move into the Sweet 16. Richmond seems to have a little more experience, and a better non-conference schedule. Look for the Spiders to eventually wear the Eagles down behind the arch. Richmond wins this game and becomes the NCAA cinderella.
Our pick: Bet the Richmond Spiders -3. Bet the Spiders and all the NCAA tournament games Iasbet.
