The Connecticut Huskies will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday in a huge Big East clash. This is the second time these two teams have played, with the Irish coming away with a huge overtime win at home back on January 4th. They have the potential of meeting up again once the Big East tournament gets rolling.
The Huskies are looking to make a last minute leap into the Top 8 within the Big East, which would give them a first round bye. Coming into Saturday, Connecticut was tied with Villanova and Marquette for 9th place, a game behind Cincinnati, Georgetown and West Virginia. The Fighting Irish with a win and a Pittsburgh win would win the regular season title. Even with a win, second place would at least be assured for the Irish. The top four teams get two byes to start the conference tournament.
Connecticut Huskies Overview
The Huskies have been up and down all season long. After a red-hot start to the season, they have cooled off some in the conference. The Huskies have lost three of their last four games; with road losses at Louisville and West Virginia, and also a win over Marquette. Connecticut did pick up a road win at Cincinnati at the end of the month.
Kimba Walker is the leading scorer for the Huskies. Walker is scoring 22.8 points per game, and also dishing out 4.4 assists per game. Walker started the season scoring nearly 30 points per game, but has cooled down since then. The Huskies are the 9th leading rebounding team, as they are grabbing 40.1 per game.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Overview
Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish have won three straight games. Following their loss at West Virginia on February 19th, the Irish have downed Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova. Notre Dame is led by Ben Hansbrough and Tim Abromaitis. The two are combining for nearly 33 points per game for a team that is scoring nearly 76 per game.
The Fighting Irish are in the running for a top 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Fighting Irish have only been to the Final Four 1 time in their school history. The school is set to make their 31st trip to the NCAA tournament.
