NCAA Hoops Betting: BYU vs. San Diego St Tip & Pick

Wed, Jan 26, 3:54pm by Kevin Pitstock

First place in the Mountain West Conference will be up for grabs on Wednesday when they Aztecs of San Diego State take on the Cougars of Brigham Young University. Both teams are 5-0 in conference play, leading Colorado State, UNLV and Utah. The Aztecs have yet to be beaten all season, while the Cougars have a neutral site loss to the Bruins of UCLA on the season. The teams two have been tested during conference play, both playing in tight games. The Cougars and Aztecs will meet up again on February 26th in San Diego, in a game that could be a lot in the Mountain West.

Gonzaga Team Preview

The Aztecs started the season with a big win over Gonzaga, which seemingly jumpstarted their 2010 – 2011 season. Other wins came over Wichita State, St. Mary’s and California during the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Aztecs rank as the 7th best shooting team in the nation, making nearly 49.3% of their shots. Kawhi Leonard is the leading scorer and rebound man for the Aztecs. Leonard is averaging a double-double, with 15.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. San Diego State has never been to the Final Four, and also never won a tournament game. Their #4 ranking in the most recent Associated Press is the highest ranking they have ever had.

BYU Team Preview

The Brigham Young Cougars have won nine straight games since their pre-Christmas loss to the Bruins. Guard Jimmer Fredette added his second game of 40+ scoring when the Cougars downed Colorado State. The other time Fredette poured in 40+ was the January 5th win at UNLV. Fredette leads the nation with 26.7 points per game. The game at the Marriott Center is expected to be in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 23,000. That would be the biggest crowd in the history of the Arena. Brigham Young ranks fifth in the country in points scored; they are putting up nearly 86 per game.

Our Pick and Prediction

This will be a thriller in Utah. Two of the top teams in a conference game is always fun, and could provide show fireworks. Now when two teams that are unbeaten in conference play and both in the Top 10 get together – even greater things will happen. It appears the Cougars have several advantages in this game, including home court advantage and the best player on the court in Fredette. The Cougars of Brigham Young are favored by -5 in this game. We expect BYU to win this game, but think it will be a close game. Therefore, we are picking the San Diego State Aztecs to cover +5 on the road Wednesday.  These odds are brought to you by Sportingbet.
