The Big Ten will see a huge game being played on Sunday afternoon. The former #1 team in the country – Ohio State Buckeyes will take their game to West Lafayette to battle with the Purdue Boilermakers. This is the second time these two teams have played this season with the Buckeyes coming away with a blow-out win in late January.
Both teams are vying for a Big Ten title, with the Buckeyes currently leading the Boilermakers by two games in the standings. Also in the mix, the Wisconsin Badgers are three games back of Ohio State.
Purdue Boilermakers Overview:
Purdue, led by Matt Painter took a big blow at the beginning of the season when leading scorer Robbie Hummel tore his ACL in pre-season action. Taking over as the leading scorer for the Boilermakers has been guard Ja’Juan Johnson. Johnson is scoring more than 20 points per game for Purdue. Also adding in on the scoring has been E’Twuan Moore. Moore is averaging just under 18 points per game.
The Boilermakers are coming off wins at Illinois, and a home win over Wisconsin. Purdue took losses earlier in the season to Richmond and West Virginia. While in conference, besides their loss to Ohio State, the Boilermakers also lost at Minnesota and Wisconsin this season. With a win over Ohio State, the Boilermakers would certainly move into the Top 10 when the new Associated Press poll is released on Monday.
Ohio State Buckeyes Overview:
Thad Matta and the Ohio State Buckeyes have lost just one game all season long. Their most recent loss at Wisconsin dropped them out of the #1 spot. The Buckeyes since that loss beat Michigan State to get back on track. The Buckeyes are led in scoring by freshmen Jared Sullinger. Sullinger is scoring 17.8 points per game, and also ripping down 10 rebounds per game. The Buckeyes rank as 29th in the country, scoring 77.2 points per game.
The Buckeyes are looking for a #1 spot overall in the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes could all but stamp their spot at the top of the Big Ten Conference with a win. Ohio State has remaining games at home against Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, and also a road game at Penn State.
Purdue/Ohio State Prediction:
This should be a lot of fun. The Boilermakers are very tough to beat at home, and they know that if they want a chance to win the conference, they have to beat the Buckeyes. Ohio State since their loss seem to be playing with a little attitude. Look for Sullinger to have a big game, doing whatever he pleases in the paint.
When it comes down to it, look for the hot shooting of Johnson and Moore to keep the Boilermakers in the game. Purdue comes in as a -2 favorite over the highly ranked Buckeyes. Look for Purdue to win this game!
