Best Australian horses to bet on

Boban @ $8 – Multiple Group One winner Boban is the current favourite for the Cox Plate and he really shines come carnival time. He is a proven top liner and if he does line up in this race he will likely start shorter than $8 so that is great value. Bet with to lock in that value with no risk due to their money-back special.

Fiorente @ $10 – Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner looks a likely starter in the Cox Plate and he has shown that he is more than just a stayer. The Gai Waterhouse-trained runner has the ability to run stick with the sprinters and take out the longer distance races, making him a very safe bet for the Cox Plate.

Happy Trails @ $10 – He hasn’t raced since finishing second in the 2013 Cox Plate and if he lines up, he is a great chance to go one better. The seven-year-old will start his preparation within the next few months so keep and eye on his progress and follow his market movement at

Shamus Award @ $17 – Last year’s winner is an obvious inclusion and he’s not lacking in race fitness. He is a very fit young horse and he was good enough to win as a maiden last October. The Moonee Valley track plays right in to his hands and he looks like another good bet to win it back-to-back.

Cox Plate long-shots

Fawkner @ 31 – This impressive gelding won the 2013 Caulfield Cup and he might have a crack at the Cox Plate this year. He is very underrated even though he comes from a very astute stable. He has a win percentage of over 40% and he has won four stakes race which is a good statistic.

Sacred Falls @ $41 – The former New Zealand runner has proven himself in Australia for Chris Waller and he continues to run good races in Sydney. If he were to race in Victoria he would likely be very competitive and his Cox Plate price is very generous. He has the ability to sit just off a quick pace and a race like this will suit him down to a tee.

Ihtsahymn @ $51 – The Perth galloper is extremely underrated for a gelding who has won seven of his 13 career starts. Fred Kersley (Northerly) knows how to train Cox Plate winning horses and he just might have another won to win it here. He gets back in his races and he can use the swing bend at Moonee Valley to his advantage.

Cox Plate race details and history

What: Cox Plate, Group One over 2040 metres.
Purse: $3,000,000
When: Saturday, October 25, 2014.
Where: Moonee Valley, Melbourne, Australia.

The Cox Plate is one of the world’s best weight-for-age races where the winner must possess both speed and stamina around the 2040 metre Moonee Valley track. Held throughout the Melbourne Spring Carnival, the Cox Plate is one of the major draw card races featuring Australia and the world’s elite sprinter-milers. The race is so highly respected that it got included in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship in 1999, which is considered the grand prix of racing.

There have been many champions to win the Cox Plate including Phar Lap, Makybe Diva, Might And Power, Northerly and Sunline on two occasions. First run in 1922 when an English horse took the honours, the Cox Plate has continued to grow in popularity and is now the pinnacle for most middle distance horses across the globe. In more recent times the grand old galloper Fields Of Omagh took out the event in 2003 and 2006, a rare feat to this race with a three year gap.

Bart Cummings took out his fourth Cox Plate in 2009 with the globetrotting So You Think in a very easy display and the maiden three-year-old Shamus Award took out last year’s edition. The favourites in the betting have a very good record in this race. They have a winning percentage of 41% and favourites starting at a price less than $2 have a win percentage of 70%.
