1st: No 1. Illo
2nd: No 2. Moriarty
3rd: No 5. Court Connection
4th: No 6. Maules Creek
The main race of the day appears to be a battle between the Chris Waller-trained pair of Illo and Moriarty. Leaning the way of the German import Illo due to his excellent first-up effort when third in the Group Three Doncaster Prelude behind Skyerush, with that mare since coming out and winning the Group Two Emancipation Stakes. Moriarty only finished marginally behind Illo in that same race, but with a much better barrier for the top weight, the selection has gone his way. For third we have gone with Lonhro gelding Court Connection who was a winning over 2000m two starts back in the Canberra Cup and it would be no surprise if he is right in the finish here. The John Thompson-trained Maules Creek finally raced back into some form last time out  finishing fourth behind Kelinni over 2000m and looks a good each way chance.

Race 8: Wagga Wagga Marketplace Benchmark 70 (1200m)
1st: No 3. Code Word
2nd: No 4. Who’s Paying
3rd: No 7. Daryl
4th: No 12. Nitro

Best Bet Of The Day: Race 5, No 3. Fantastic Ballad 3yo g. (Dream Ballad x In The Clover, by Bureaucracy), trainer Guy Walter. Very much a product of the local breeding industry and has a recent win two starts back by one-and-a-half lengths over 1400m at Canberra before back in trip to the 1300m for a game second at Warwick Farm before the stakes winner Boban. Will appreciate the 1600m and should be extremely hard to beat.

Best Rough Chance: Race 8, No 3. Code Word 6yo g. (More Than Ready x Vocabulary, by Encosta de Lago), trained by John Marzol. First-up for a year with a change in trainer, the six-year-old has a win and two placed efforts first up in the past and he should be good odds. Take on trust…

Best On Breeding: Race 7, No 1. Illo 7yo h. (Terullian x Iora, by Koenigsstuhl), trainer Chris Waller. From a pedigree that is literally “foreign” to many Australia, the seven-year-old German-bred is a half-sister to the Group One winner Iota, as well as Ioannina (Champion Older mare in Germany). His pedigree also contains the multiple stakes-winning Champion Three-year-old Irian and the Listed Sandown Cup winner Ibicenco.
