The Philadelphia Eagles will be visiting the Washington Redskins for the first Monday Night Football game of the 2013 NFL season. The matchup will see two teams that would like to get off to a good start and show that they could be competitive in the race for a division championship.
The biggest news in Washington, of course, is the health of Robert Griffin III. Last season, RG3 was one of the most exciting players in football, showing both a world-class arm and the ability to run as well as any quarterback in the league. But questions remain about how he’ll respond after surgery to repair a torn ACL in the offseason. Griffin believes he will start the game against the Eagles, but the bigger question will be about whether he’ll be limited in any way: either by his own body, or by an offensive scheme that seeks to limit how many times he’ll be hit during each game.
Overall, Washington should look a lot like they did in 2012. Expect to see an explosive offense (provided that RG3 can provide anything close to what he did last season) and a relatively weak defensive unit, meaning Washington will generally need to score a lot of points to win games.
ACL tears have been a big story in Philadelphia, too. Several players have gone down with that same injury, including wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who was a key factor in the Eagles offense last season. That could hurt the fast-paced offense that new coach Chip Kelly is trying to install. Still, the offense will play into the strengths of quarterback Michael Vick, who can still cause headaches for defensive coordinators at this point in his career.
The Eagles will also be seeing some changes on the defensive side of the ball, where new defensive coordinator Billy Davis will be altering the basic scheme from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4. This might mean that the Eagles need some time to adjust to the new system — though they still might be better than last year right off the bat, considering how weak their defense was last year.
Combining the new defense for the Eagles and the refreshed Redskins offense that should benefit from the return of Griffin to the quarterback spot, I expect Washington to score a lot on Monday night. Look for the Redskins to put up more than enough points to win this game: Philadelphia will see the endzone a few times, too, but they won’t be able to keep up.
Prediction: Washington 34, Philadelphia 21
