Week five of the 2017-18 Hyundai A-League season provided few surprises, with Sydney FC continuing their unbeaten streak. League strugglers Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners battled out a bore draw, leaving both sides still winless this campaign.
Melbourne Victory were incredibly lucky to come away with a 1-1 draw against Western Sydney on Monday night. The Victory could have been down two or three goals at half time, but salvaged a draw against a Wanderers team who failed to put the game away.
Melbourne City’s unbeaten run came to an end on Friday night, with Sydney FC deservedly earning a 1-0 victory at AAMI Park.
The win has strengthened the Sky Blues’ championship credentials, with their odds to win the title shortening from $2.60 into $2.40 with Sportsbet.
For City, the loss wasn’t catastrophic, but showed the gap between the Sydney FC and the rest of the pack. Melbourne City’s odds have gone out from $3.75 to $4.33 at Sportsbet.
Elsewhere in the outright market, there has largely been stability in the odds.
Newcastle’s 3-0 demolition of Wellington Phoenix kept their outright odds static at $12.
The Jets will be tested in their next three fixtures against Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne Victory. Taking points from all of those matches would certainly see their outright odds firm.
Wellington Phoenix continue to struggle away from home, with their loss seeing their outright odds spiral out to $126 from $81 last week.
The Phoenix are one of four winless teams, but look clueless away from home and struggle defensively
Perth Glory returned home and accounted for Adelaide United. Since making the FFA Cup final, Adelaide have had a consecutive losses. Their outright odds have drifted from $17 to $18 at Sportsbet this week.
Perth Glory are steadily picking up wins at home and find themselves four points clear of the chasing pack in the top six.
What Glory does on the road will be pivotal to their finals positioning and determining if they have a say at the business end of the season.
Perth’s outright odds have come in from $13 to $12 this week. They face Wellington on Sunday afternoon. That has been the sort of fixture that Perth have dropped in the past. If they are serious about contending for the top four this season, they must grab all three points on Sunday, considering numerous Phoenix players will be unavailable due to national selection.
Brisbane Roar once again face a winless team in Melbourne Victory on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.
The Roar are friendless in outright betting, going from $26 to $31 in the space of a week.
Victory despite their lack of wins this season, have remained steady at $6.
Central Coast visit AAMI Park on Sunday night for a match against Melbourne City. The Mariners outright odds have come in from $91 to $81 this week.
