There were a number of upset results in the opening weekend of the 2018-19 A-League season, with week two’s fixtures offering up a number of short-priced favourites, including Sydney FC in the Sydney derby.
Adelaide United versus Newcastle Jets
Friday, 26 October 2018 at 7:50pm at Coopers Stadium, Adelaide
The Reds managed to grab a point from their home game against Sydney FC despite being second best for much of the contest last week.
They are $2.10 favourites to beat the Newcastle Jets on Friday, with the Jets playing consecutive road games after losing to Wellington on Sunday.
Newcastle is priced at $3.30 to win, with the draw paying $3.50.
The Jets own a good recent record against Adelaide, winning three of their past five matches against them. That run comes after a six-game winless span against the Reds.
They have found scoring goals a challenge in Adelaide, netting just four times in their last seven visits to Coopers Stadium, with three of those goals coming in the second half.
The Reds have scored at least one goal in their past seven matches against Newcastle, last failing to find the scoresheet in December 2015.
Last season’s beaten Grand Finalists look to avoid consecutive losses for the first time in 18 months after going down to Wellington by a 2-1 scoreline last week.
There has been a tendency for goals in this fixture in recent times, with the over 2.5 goals priced at $1.66 for this match and under 2.5 goals paying $2.10.
Adelaide to win and both teams to score is priced at $3.75, while the Jets to do the same is at $5.50.
The Reds may have one eye looking forward to next week’s FFA Cup game against Sydney FC but know this match presents an excellent opportunity to catch Newcastle on the tough end of back-to-back road games. They should have enough to get the job done at home.
Best bet- Result & Both to Score Adelaide United at $3.75.
Sydney FC versus Western Sydney Wanderers
Saturday, 27 October 2018 at 7:50pm at the SCG, Sydney
The first Sydney derby of the season takes place at the SCG when the Sky Blues host the Wanderers on Saturday night.
Sydney FC is the $1.80 favourite to win this match, with the Wanderers $4.20 outsiders. The draw is paying $3.75.
It is the Wanderers who have a wretched history in the Sydney Derby, winning just one of their past 13 games against their rivals. That streak includes eight losses and four draws.
Sydney FC’s defence has proven hard for the red and black’s to break down, as they have failed to score a second half goal in their past seven matches against the Sydney.
Under new coach Markus Babbel, the Wanderers will be hoping to rediscover the form that took them to the pinnacle of football in the Asian region.
Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Perth was a promising start for them, but they will need to improve if they want to beat Sydney on Saturday night.
Western Sydney has struggled scoring goals late in games and managed to find the net just eight times in the final half hour last season, the joint-fewest in the A-League.
Wanderers’ striker Oriol Riera has scored three goals in his past three games and two of Western Sydney’s last three goals in the Derby.
This is the first Derby taking place at the SCG while Allianz Stadium is being rebuilt. We expect Sydney FC to continue their recent dominance over the Wanderers and win this one comfortably.
Best bet- Sydney FC to win and over 2.5 goals at $2.60.
Melbourne Victory versus Perth Glory
Sunday, 28 October 2018 at 7pm at AAMI Park, Melbourne
Victory would have been disappointed with relinquishing a 1-0 lead in the Melbourne Derby to lose 2-1 to City last weekend but will have another chance to get their first win at home this season when they host Perth on Sunday.
Melbourne is a $1.80 favourite to win the match, with Perth priced at $4 outsiders. The draw is paying $3.75.
Perth has typically struggled against Melbourne but did win their last A-League match 1-0 in March last season.
Victory is looking to avoid consecutive losses against the Glory for the first time since 2012.
Perth has also found it hard winning at AAMI Park against Victory, securing three points on just one occasion at the venue, in a 3-2 win in March 2013. They have drawn three times and lost four matches at the ground.
Glory striker Diego Castro has been a prolific goal scorer against Melbourne, finding the net in three of his past four matches against Victory.
The Victory’s strong record against Perth leads us to favour them in this one and coupled with the Glory’s bad record in Melbourne, the price on offer for Victory look a tad longer than we expected.
Best bet- Melbourne Victory to win at $1.80.
