A-League Round 3: Preview, Odds and Best Bets

Wed, Oct 31, 11:58am by Staff Writer

Adelaide United are the newest FFA Cup champions after prevailing 2-1 against Sydney FC on Tuesday night but there is no rest for either side this weekend with Sydney FC playing Melbourne City on Friday night and Adelaide meeting Central Coast on Sunday afternoon.

Melbourne City versus Sydney FC

Friday, 2 November 2018 at 7:50pm at AAMI Park, Melbourne

Two teams that have both taken four points from their opening two games meet on Friday night when Melbourne City hosts Sydney FC.

It is the home side who are narrow favourites, priced at $2.60 to win the match, with Sydney FC $2.63 underdogs. The draw is paying $3.30.

Melbourne left it late last weekend to snatch a point on the road at Central Coast, while Sydney dominated the Sydney Derby to account for Western Sydney 2-0.

The Sky Blues are coming into this match after a 2-1 loss in the FFA Cup on Tuesday night.

That match was an incredibly physical encounter, with neither side leaving anything to spare. Steve Corica named his best side for that one, so it will be interesting to see if many of those players are backing up for this fixture lees than three nights later.

Although they may be tired, Sydney FC boasts a commanding recent head-to-head record against City.

They have won the last six matches between the two teams, with their last loss in this fixture coming in the 2016-17 season.

Despite their strong record, we are going to take Sydney FC on in this one. Melbourne City have started the season well and will see this as an opportunity to capitalise on a wounded opponent.

Best bet- Melbourne City to win at $2.60.

Newcastle Jets versus Melbourne Victory

Saturday, 3 November 2018 at 7:50pm at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

It is a rematch of the 2017-18 A-League Grand Final when Newcastle hosts Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

Victory spoiled the party for the hosts last year and will be looking to do the same on Saturday night as both sides vie for their first win of the season.

Melbourne Victory go into this one as $2.37 favourites, with the Jets priced at $2.75. The draw is paying $3.60.

Victory battled back from a 2-0 half-time deficit against Perth to square the game at 2-2 nearing stoppage time, before conceding in the 93rd minute to lose 3-2 to the Glory last weekend.

Newcastle took the lead in the second half of their match against Adelaide before the league’s in form striker Craig Goodwin equalised, ensuring the match ended 1-1.

These teams have split this fixture traditionally over the years, with Victory’s last triumph in Newcastle coming in last year’s Grand Final by a 1-0 score.

It has been the home team that has generally held sway in this match up, with Newcastle winning both home games last season by 4-1 and 2-1 scorelines.

Melbourne is still getting used to life without Besart Berisha and that is evident in their static attacking play this season.

It would be uncharacteristic of them to lose three on the trot and although they had a poor start to their last campaign, they will be desperate for at least a point in this one.

Best bet- Newcastle and Melbourne Victory to draw at $3.60

Central Coast Mariners versus Adelaide United

Sunday, 4 November 2018 at 5pm at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford

The Mariners host back-to-back home games when they welcome Adelaide to the Central Coast on Sunday afternoon.

The home side are $3.30 underdogs in this one, with Adelaide priced as $2 favourites. The draw is paying $3.50.

Adelaide will be looking to cap off a week to remember with a league win after claiming their second FFA Cup on Tuesday night, defeating Sydney FC 2-1.

It will be a tough task for the Reds to travel after the highs of victory and it provides a chance to back the Mariners in some way.

Central Coast has not had a happy time of things against Adelaide historically, with their last win on the Central Coast against the Reds coming back way in 2015.

Only once in their last 21 matches have these two teams played in a draw, making the price of $3.50 on offer far too short for this option.

The Mariners have started the season looking well organised defensively and that will come in handy on Sunday against a Reds team that will throw plenty at them.

Central Coast is priced at $2.50 in the draw no bet market and given they have drawn their opening two games of the season, this market offers some added insurance should the Mariners be unable to find a winner.

Best bet- Central Coast Mariners draw no bet at $2.50.
