A-League Round 6 Best Bets: Sydney, Newcastle and Perth our picks

Wed, Nov 8, 12:00pm by Staff Writer

Five rounds of the 2017-18 Hyundai A-League season have been played and it is Sydney FC who are on top of the table and the only remaining undefeated team.

Hot on their heels are Melbourne City, who last weekend lost 1-0 to Sydney.

At the opposite end of the table, four teams are winless- Melbourne Victory, Central Coast, Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix.

Central Coast Mariners versus Sydney FC

Friday, 10 November 2017 at 7.50pm

The first match of the round sees Sydney FC travel to Gosford to take on Central Coast.

In what looks to be a total mismatch on paper, Sydney FC have won eight of the past nine matches between the two sides. The Sky Blues’ last loss to the Mariners was way back in 2014.

Central Coast will be desperate for their first win of the season. Goals have not been the problem for the Mariners, as they have scored in four of their first five games.
Defence has been their problem, with the Mariners conceding multiple goals twice already this season.

After consecutive draws, Paul Okon’s side will be looking to earn their first win of the season.

They will have a tough time of it on Friday night, with Sydney FC simply a cut above this current Mariners team.

Little value exists in backing Sydney FC at $1.62, so we have turned to the handicap markets for some extra value.

Sydney FC -1 Asian handicap at $2.04 looks a good play, considering the Mariners tendency to ship goals.

Best bet: Sydney FC -1 Asian handicap at $2.04 at Sportsbet

Adelaide United versus Newcastle Jets

Saturday, 11 November 2017 at 5.35pm

After a hot start to the new season, Adelaide United have cooled off somewhat since their FFA Cup semi-final triumph.

United have lost two on the trot and will be looking to avoid a third successive defeat when they host the Jets on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets have been the surprise packet of the season thus far. With their attack spear headed by striker Roy O’Donovan, Ernie Merrick’s side have looked threatening in attack in all of their games and are yet to see defeat this season.

Siding with the red-hot Jets looks the play in this game.

More conservative bettors can take the draw no bet option at $2.15 at Sportsbet.

With Adelaide in a little bit of a slump, the Newcastle Jets should be taken at a handy price of $2.88 at Sportsbet.

Best bet: Newcastle Jets to win $2.88 at Sportsbet

Wellington Phoenix versus Perth Glory

Sunday, 12 November 2017 at 2.30pm

Wellington Phoenix were dreadful in their last performance in Newcastle. A 3-0 loss flattered the visitors, who were on the back foot from the outset.

Perth Glory came from behind to defeat Adelaide on Saturday night to earn their second win of the season.

Bookmakers look to have the odds flipped in this one, with Wellington favourites and Perth underdogs.

While the Phoenix pick up the majority of their points at home, a last start 3-3 draw after leading 3-0 shows how vulnerable the 2017/18 Phoenix team are.

Add the fact that the New Zealand national team has a vital World Cup qualifier against Peru this week, the Phoenix team will be depleted and have their minds elsewhere.

Perth Glory should be too good in this one and heap more misery on the Phoenix. They are the bet of the week.

Best bet: Perth Glory to win at $2.75 at Sportsbet

Round 6 Fixtures

Central Coast $5 Sydney FC $1.62 Draw $3.75

Adelaide United $2.20 Newcastle Jets $2.88 Draw $3.60

Melbourne Victory $1.83 Brisbane Roar $4 Draw $3.60

Wellington Phoenix $2.30 Perth Glory $2.75 Draw $3.30
