Week 8 of the 2017-18 Hyundai A-League season features five matches, including two featuring the finalists of Tuesday nights FFA Cup, Sydney FC and Adelaide United.
After 120 minutes of pulsating football, players from both Sydney and Adelaide were literally out on their feet.
Given the tight turnaround and the fact both teams are playing three matches in less than 10 days, question marks surround the fitness of both teams heading into their matches this weekend.
Newcastle Jets versus Melbourne Victory
Thursday, 23 November 2017 at 7.50pm AEDST
A short turnaround for Melbourne Victory as they travel from Perth to Newcastle in the space of four days to take on the Jets.
Newcastle were gallant last weekend against Sydney FC in their 2-1 loss. Horrendous conditions ruined the spectacle of the game in the first half.
An early Jets second half goal looked to have revived the contest, but Newcastle couldn’t find the crucial breakthrough.
Melbourne Victory notched their first victory of the new season with a 2-0 win over Perth Glory.
Goals to Besart Berisha and Leroy George set up the win, with Victory looking for consecutive wins for the first time this season.
With Newcastle’s only loss coming last week, the Jets have been strong at home with one win and two draws. They haven’t played at home in a fortnight, so will be itching to get back onto McDonald Jones Stadium.
Newcastle are slight favourites at $2.50 at Sportsbet, with Victory at $2.60.
We are keen to take Newcastle at home, given Victory’s heavy recent schedule.
Best bet- Newcastle Jets to win at $2.50 at Sportsbet
Sydney FC versus Brisbane Roar
Saturday, 25 November 2017 at 7.50pm AEDST
Sydney FC are now the simultaneous holders of the FFA Cup, Premiers Plate and A-League Grand Final trophy.
The downside for the Sky Blues is that they have to put their celebrations on hold, with a fixture against the Brisbane Roar four days after their triumphs.
Brisbane Roar won their first game of the 2017-18 season with a dominating 3-1 win against Melbourne City.
The Roar struck early and late in the final half, taking a 2-0 lead into the sheds at half time.
At odds of $1.53 at Sportsbet, Sydney FC are not close to being a value pick in this contest.
A host of players were on the haunches and needing attention from trainers not only after the 90-allotted minutes, after as the game extended into extra time.
A-League teams aren’t blessed with the depth of some of Europe’s top clubs, nor the fitness levels possessed by players overseas who play up to three games per week.
For that reason, Brisbane Roar’s price of $5.50 is outrageous, despite the fact they are playing in Sydney.
This could be a messy game and one in which there are few chances for the Roar to strike, but at $4.05 the Draw No Bet option at Sportsbet offers punters some insurance if the match is drawn after 90 minutes, with this market refunding the bet in that circumstance.
Best bet: Brisbane Roar Draw No Bet at Sportsbet at $4.05
Adelaide United versus Western Sydney Wanderers
Sunday, 26 November 2017 at 7pm AEDST
Adelaide United have the tough task of backing up on Sunday evening after losing the FFA Cup on Tuesday.
To compound matters, Western Sydney did not play last weekend due to a poor pitch at Spotless Stadium. The Wanderers will be fresh and eager for all three points at Hindmarsh on Sunday.
Prior to last weekends road win at Central Coast in the dying moments, Adelaide had not won a game since their 2-1 win against the Wanderers in the FFA Cup four weeks ago.
That record included three consecutive losses, two at home to Melbourne City and Newcastle Jets.
The Wanderers have been the king of the draw all season, drawing their past five fixtures.
Under new coach Josep Gombau, this clash has a little extra spice, with the Spaniard facing his former side for the first time in Adelaide.
Once again, a situational play based on Adelaide’s fatigue and the Wanderer’s lack of fatigue is to take Western Sydney to win.
The Wanderers are $2.40 at Sportsbet and have the quality in their side to snare all three points in Adelaide.
Best bet- Western Sydney Wanderers to win at $2.40 at Sportsbet
