Melbourne Victory will make the trek to Coopers Stadium looking to register their maiden win of the season this week against Adelaide United on Friday night. United are $2.50 favourites on the back of their strong 3-1 win over Perth Glory. The win did not come without a cost, though. Adelaide not only received a record eight yellow cards, but were also on the receiving end of two reds. Winning the game with nine men was an impressive feat but they will head in to this match without central defender Nigel Boogaard and midfielder Isaias Sanchez as a result of their discrepancies. Victory will not only be looking to open their winning account but also their goal scoring account after being held to a scoreless draw against the Heart in Round 1.
As far as history goes, Victory hold the edge over United with a 15-10 head-to-head record (and five draws). However, the Reds have managed to win two out of the last three clashes between the two sides.
Adelaide will this season rely heavily on its two Argentine stars in midfielder Marcelo Carrusca and striker Jeronimo Neumann. Carrusca could well be the key to United’s success and if he can fire, the team may well follow. Neumann was pivotal in last week’s win, scoring two superb goals, and Victory will look to the likes of Adama Traore and Pablo Contreras to shut him down.
Goal scoring freak Archie Thompson is undoubtedly a pivotal player for the Victory. They’ll need him to produce class finishes to attacking opportunities not just against the Reds, but throughout the year. Thompson missed an opportunity to score last weekend which he’d net on most occasions, so there’s no doubting he’ll be keen to atone for that.
Mitch Nichols and James Troisi are also vital cogs in the Melbourne Victory wheel. They’ll provide stability and poise in the midfield which is where the game could be won and lost.

With both sides exhibiting tenacious defensive efforts last week, the onus will be on Adelaide and Melbourne to score in order to take home the three points. While many fans agreed Victory’s performance was below par against their cross-town rivals, what they did show was an ability to stifle constant attacks.
Adelaide proved against the Glory in Week 1 it has some great scoring power, but with two important players sidelined for this match, that could even things up a little. United also showcased their defensive grit, holding out for the win with just nine men on the park. It’s going to be very tight and the draw looks a juicy option at $3.40. Prediction: Draw
Plenty of value for our money in the markets for this match of the round. Here are just a few of our recommended bets with IASbet:
Draw: $3.40 with IASbet.com
Both sides will defend strongly and the game could very well end in a stalemate. It would be Victory’s second draw to start the season.
Adelaide (-1): $2.88
Draw (-1): $3.00
Melbourne (+1): $1.45
In the handicap market I’m happy to take Melbourne Victory with the advantage of a one-goal head start.
Under 2.5 Goals: $2.05
Over 2.5 Goals: $1.71
This is another market I think is offering us plenty of value. I’m leaning towards a 1-1 or even 0-0 result, so ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ at $2.05 looks solid.
If you’re seeking some additional value, the correct score bet of 1-1 is at $6.50, while a 0-0 result is paying $11.00. Jeronimo Neumann is at $2.37 to score a goal at any stage in the match and considering he netted a brace last week, those aren’t bad odds either.
