Adelaide sit in eighth place and could find making the playoffs impossible should they lose here.
Adelaide United’s solitary win this season came in round one, when they defeated the Perth Glory. Since that time it has been slim pickings for the South Australians, who have managed just three draws and five losses. They have six competition points, only two clear of the winless Phoenix and Heart. The rest of the field is slipping away from Adelaide, with its nearest rival being on 12 points.
The equation is simple for Adelaide United; start winning now or it’s curtains for the season. Punters have gone cold on United who are now $21 in title betting. Reality says that, on current form, they’re more chance of winning the wooden spoon at $4.
Their opposition for this encounter are the reigning champions, the Mariners. They have been sneaking along under the radar to date. They sit in fifth place and have a game in hand which will be played next Thursday. Should they win that, they could well find themselves in second place.
The Mariners calmly disposed of Sydney FC last week, a side which had won four on end and sit above them on the ladder. There is a good vibe about the Central Coast team, which are giving the impression they are just beginning to warm to their task. The $6.50 currently available for the Mariners winning this season’s premiership could shorten dramatically if they can win here and then defeat Wellington on Thursday, so it may be a good time to invest in that market.
Given the above facts, one could be excused for thinking that the Mariners should be prohibitively priced to win this game. Reality says they are more than backable at $2.30. Adelaide do have the advantage of playing at home, but their record there this season isn’t flash either, with one win, one draw and two losses from their four matches.
History also leans heavily towards the Mariners. The Mariners have a pretty handy record at Coopers stadium with more wins than losses. The most damning stat of all may well be that Adelaide has not beaten the Central Coast since 2009.
Adelaide need goals and the man who can score them is Jeronimo Neumann. Neumann scored a brace in their round one win and backed it up with another goal in round two. But the Argentinian import has had a drought since and his side desperately need him to spark some scoring opportunities for United to be competitive here.
Adelaide’s defensive efforts need to improve, they have conceded more goals than any other team this season. This has proven costly, considering that they have no problem scoring themselves, with only the Roar scoring more goals than them. Their opponents have found the net no less than seventeen times in nine outings, which makes it very hard to win games.
Adelaide will need to contain the scoring punch of Marcos Flores and Daniel McBreen, who are both prolific scorers for the Mariners. It will be an arduous task for United and a good test of their defensive prowess.

It’s hard to really find any positive factors to suggest that Adelaide United can win here.
They haven’t won for nine weeks and haven’t beaten their opposition for four years. It is hardly a glowing reference for the eighth-placed side.
The Mariners on the other hand look like they are improving each week. Coach Peter Moss has plenty of talent at his disposal and his side could well be in the top two this time next week. With the juicy $2.30 on offer, it’s has to be a Mariners win for mine.
Prediction – Central Coast by a goal.
Adelaide – $3.10
Mariners – $2.30 head-to-head with IASbet.com
Draw – $3.30
This is easily my bet of the game. The Mariners look massive value at this quote against a side with no winning form and it is a great way for us to profit.
Adelaide (+1)- $1.57
Draw (+1) – $3.75 with IASbet.com
Mariners (+1) – $4.50
I am banking on the Mariners winning by a goal in this market. That would see the draw win via the handicap. It is hard to ignore at $3.75 and worthy of an investment.
Under 2.5 Goals- $1.82
Over 2.5 Goals – $1.91 with IASbet.com
Given that both sides are prolific scorers and that Adelaide concede more goals that anyone else, it is hard to see any reason not to invest on the over 2.5 goals at $1.91.
The Mariners look pretty good value in the “draw no bet” option at $1.59. The Central Coast/Draw in the “double chance” market also looks a put in/take out proposition at $1.32.
If you like to invest on the correct score markets, I’d look at having something along the lines of the Mariners 2-1 which is currently $10.00.
