AFL Round 11 Friday and Saturday Specials

Wed, May 30, 7:15am by Staff Writer

Round 11 of the 2018 AFL season marks Indigenous Round and is headlined by Essendon and Richmond’s annual Dreamtime at the G match on Saturday night.

Hawthorn versus Port Adelaide

Saturday, 2 June 2018 at 2.10pm AEST at University of Tasmania Stadium, Launceston

Hawthorn have fallen outside of the top eight after losing three consecutive matches and will be desperate to stop their slide against Port Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks are narrow $1.87 favourites for the clash in Tasmania, with the Power $1.93 outsiders at Sportsbet.

Port Adelaide enjoyed a round 10 bye after their trip to Shanghai, where they easily accounted for the Suns.

The Power have a good recent record against the Hawks, winning three of their past four against them.

Saturday’s game will be the first time the two teams meet in Tasmania since 2012 where the Hawks were 12 goal winners. That is the only occasion Port have played at the University of Tasmania Stadium.

Port will fancy their chances against a down-on-confidence Hawks team that has been unable to show enough in defense to rebound off half-back and score with the fluency we have seen from them in recent times.

The Hawthorn list is in transition, with a number of debutants playing for the club this season and despite having a 5-5 record, they are outsiders to play finals on current form.

Hawthorn’s record in Launceston is almost impeccable, with an 85 per cent winnings percentage at the ground and a 28-1-4 record overall.

Despite their record, the Hawks are out of form and we will gladly back the side in form, with a week’s break under their belt.

Best bet- Port Adelaide to win at $1.93

Gold Coast versus Geelong

Saturday, 2 June 2018 at 4.35pm AEST at Metricon Stadium

The Gold Coast Suns finally return to Metricon Stadium after it was used during the Commonwealth Games, for their first true home game of the season.

The Suns have been forced to travel far and wide to play their games in 2018 and will welcome the return to familiar surroundings.

It will be a tough task for the hosts as they are $3.90 outsiders when taking on the Cats who are $1.26 favourites.

This will be Gary Ablett’s first game against his former side, with plenty of off-the-ball action to be expected.

The Cats have not been at their scintillating best in recent times and have struggled to kick a score this season.

During the past month they have managed scores of 93, 66, 50 and 73. Despite a 3-1 record over this period, they have been far from convincing.

The Suns had a bye week during round 10 after their trip to Shanghai and should be energised for this clash. They are set to welcome back captain Tom Lynch, which will be an enormous boost for the side.

The Suns have lost their past four matches after a 2-0 start to the season and will be desperate to move out of the bottom four.

Geelong are 2-2 at Metricon Stadium, losing their last match at the venue by 25 points last season.

This is a danger game for the Cats and the Suns should be able to keep it close.

Best bet- Gold Coast at the 23.5-point handicap at $1.92

Essendon versus Richmond

Saturday, 2 June 2018 at 7.25pm AEST at the MCG

Essendon will host Richmond in the now annual Dreamtime at the G match on Saturday night.

The Bombers are $3.25 outsiders for the match, with the Premiership favourite Tigers $1.35 for this match.

Essendon has strung together consecutive wins after beating the Cats and Giants as underdogs.

Richmond have not had the smoothest last month, narrowly beating North Melbourne and St Kilda, before losing to West Coast.

The Tigers also lost a quarter to the Dockers, despite winning the match by 77 points.

The Bombers will relish another opportunity on the big stage after failing miserably against Collingwood on ANZAC Day.

Richmond has won the last six matches it has played against the Bombers dating back to 2014 and also thrashed the Dons in the pre-season this year.

Despite this, the Bombers are playing their best football of the season, with manic pressure the key to their game style.

The Tigers are slowly starting to pick up injuries, with Bachar Houli among others set to miss.

This would be a statement win from the Bombers on Saturday night and we think they can grab an upset win.

Best bet- Essendon Big Win Little Win 1-39 at $3.75

On Friday night, the Swans are $1.03 to beat the Blues who are $12.50 at the SCG. The Swans are nine goal favourites.

The Demons ($1.19) will be too strong for the Dogs ($4.75) on Saturday afternoon at Etihad Stadium, while the Eagles are $1.04 to beat the Saints who are $11.50 in three rather lopsided matches from a betting perspective.
