AFL Round 13 Saturday and Sunday Specials

Fri, Jun 15, 3:45pm by Staff Writer

Round 13 continues on Saturday afternoon when the Suns and Saints do battle on the Gold Coast.

The match of the round is on Sunday, when the Cats and the Tigers meet at the MCG.

Gold Coast Suns versus St Kilda

Saturday, 16 June 2018 at 4.35pm AEST at Metricon Stadium

The Suns and Saints are both in desperate need of a win, as they languish near the bottom of the ladder.

The Saints have not tasted victory since round one, but enter this match as $1.65 favourites at Sportsbet. The home side are $2.25.

Gold Coast have been horrible in the past fortnight, losing by 85 points to the Cats and 108 points to the Giants.

The Saints did not fair much better last weekend, losing to the Swans by 71 points.

St Kilda welcome back four key players for this game, with Jake Carlisle, David Armitage, Jack Billings and Billy Longer all inclusions.

That could be the difference in this match, with neither side holding any sort of advantage across the park.

The Suns have won three of the past five matches against the Saints, but they were a far better team in years gone by than they are this season.

Gold Coast are the best tackling team in the competition, laying an average of over 72 tackles per game. This is an area St Kilda struggle in, ranking 15th with only 61 tackles per game.

Gold Coast have the advantage in the contested ball, and at home, as underdogs, they will win just their fourth game in their past 20.

Best bet- Gold Coast Suns to win at $2.25

Hawthorn versus Adelaide

Saturday, 16 June 2018 at 7.25pm AEST at the MCG

Adelaide coach Don Pyke has made a number of changes to his side as they head to the MCG to take on Hawthorn on Saturday night.

The Crows are $2.25 underdogs and in a wretched run of form that has seen them lose their past three matches.

The Hawks are $1.56 favourites but have not fared much better. A last start win against Port Adelaide by under a goal came after four consecutive losses.

Adelaide have been struck down by a number of injuries to key players this season, but their ferocity and determination has also been lacking from season 2017.

A loss on Saturday night and it will be the first time since 2011 that they have lost four matches in a row.

Hawthorn has won four of the past five matches between the two teams, including a rousing comeback win in Adelaide last season.

It is Shaun Burgoyne’s 350th game of football, so the Hawks should certainly not be short of motivation for this match.

Adelaide have struggled to hit the scoreboard this season. They were a prolific goal scoring team early in the season, averaging 98 points per game. That has dropped to 71 points per game and they have not scored more than 100 points since round seven.

Hawthorn holds a 6-4 advantage against the Crows at the MCG, and it is where they play their best football.

It is difficult to back the Crows given their recent poor form.

Best bet- Hawthorn Big Win Little Win 1-39 at $2.10

Geelong versus Richmond

Sunday, 17 June 2018 at 3.20pm AEST at the MCG

Dustin Martin is a certain starter for Sunday’s game between the Cats and the Tigers.

Geelong used an explosive final quarter burst to get the better of North Melbourne last weekend.

The Tigers road woes continued, as they lost by 14 points to Port Adelaide, their third road loss of the seasons.

The Cats are $2.60 outsiders against the Tigers, who have become known as MCG specialists. They are priced at $1.50.

A clash between two top four sides, it is full of talent across the park.

Geelong have been a terrific defensive side this season, while the Tigers have built their game on pressure and attack.

Daniel Rioli may be an inclusion into the team for the Tigers after playing in the VFL in recent weeks, while the Cats are injury free heading into this match.

Richmond demolished the Cats in last years qualifying final by 51 points, after Geelong held the ascendency against the Tigers, winning the previous four matches.

None of those previous four wins were by more than 14 points and it should be another close match on Sunday.

Richmond are Premiership favourites for a reason and should bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing loss, but this match will be close.

Best bet- Tribet either team under 15.5 points at $2.60 at Sportsbet
