Round Three kicks off on Friday night at the MCG with arch rivals Carlton and Collingwood clashing. Both sides are winless to start the season and will be desperate to avoid an 0-3 start.
An all-Sydney affair headlines five matches on Sunday night with the Swans hosting the Giants at the SCG.
Carlton versus Collingwood
Friday, 6 April 2018 at 7.50pm AEST at the MCG
Carlton were deplorable for the entire match against Gold Coast on Saturday after such a strong performance in round one against Richmond.
It was the opposite for Collingwood, who put a poor round one loss to Hawthorn behind them, falling narrowly to the Giants by 16 points on Saturday afternoon.
This is a must-win game for both teams as their fans are desperately seeking reason to cheer in 2018.
The Blues will start as $2.60 underdogs with the Pies $1.50 favourites. The line is set at 12.5.
Carlton will be hoping ruckman Matthew Kreuzer can return for this match, as he was crucial in his absence against the Suns. Brodie Grundy has been in terrific form this season and taught Rory Lobb a lesson last weekend. He could be in for another big night if Kreuzer doesn’t take the field for the Blues.
The last four matches between these two teams have been decided by fewer than four goals.
We are leaning towards the Pies to win in the Big Win Little Win 1-39 market. Neither team has the firepower to blow the other team off the park nor the skill to execute a four-quarter domination.
Best bet- Collingwood Big Win Little Win 1-39 at $2.10
Gold Coast versus Fremantle
Saturday, 7 April 2018 at 4.35pm AEST at Optus Stadium
With the Commonwealth Games in full swing on the Gold Coast, the Suns have been forced to move a number of home games away from Metricon Stadium.
One such fixture is this weekend’s match against Fremantle, where the Dockers will be the ‘away’ team at Optus Stadium. The Suns will start as $2.80 underdogs with the Dockers $1.44 favourites.
The Suns have had a tremendous start to the season under new coach Stuart Dew. After a gritty round one win against North Melbourne in the wet, the Suns were led by captain Tom Lynch who booted eight goals against a hapless Carlton.
The Dockers got their season going with a big win against Essendon last Saturday night.
The Suns started as similar outsiders last weekend in Melbourne and won convincingly. While we don’t think they’ll be beating Fremantle by 34 points, the Suns are once again being given a generous 15.5 point start.
Take this option if you’re looking to be more conservative, but the Suns 1-39 is paying $3.30 and represents tremendous value in a contest featuring two evenly matched teams.
Best bet- Gold Coast Suns Big Win Little Win 1-39 at $3.30
Sydney versus GWS Giants
Saturday, 7 April 2018 at 7.25pm AEST at the SCG
The Giants are on top of the ladder and will hoping to continue their unbeaten start to the season as $2.17 underdogs when they face Sydney at the SCG.
The Swans are $1.70 favourites and are coming off a 23-point loss to Port Adelaide.
The Giants beat Collingwood last weekend for only their second ever win at the MCG but lost Tom Scully to an ankle injury in the process.
Scully is the Giants most important midfield player, so his loss will be felt for some time.
The Swans battled back to be within four points of the Power in the last quarter before falling away late in the game.
The concern for the Swans against the Giants will be controlling the GWS forward line which is set to welcome back Toby Greene after he was a late omission last weekend.
The Giants beat the Swans convincingly at the SCG last season and we expect them to repeat that effort on Saturday night as underdogs.
Best bet- GWS Giants to win at $2.17
Elsewhere on Saturday, Port Adelaide should easily account for Brisbane as $1.07 favourites. The Lions are the longest price of the round at $8.50 for their visit to Adelaide Oval.
Melbourne are $1.31 favourites against North who are paying $3.50. Both teams are coming off wins and we wouldn’t trust Melbourne with a 22.5-point start as they have been patchy in their two games this season.
The Saints are in must-win mode on Saturday night when they host Adelaide. The Saints are big outsiders at $3.50 and will struggle against the Crows who are red-hot $1.30 favourites.
