AFLW season has kicked off with some interesting results across the weekend. In a rematch of last year’s grand final the Brisbane Lions were able to exact some revenge on reigning premier the Adelaide Crows in a 12 point victory at the Norwood Oval.
It was an impressive performance on a day which was anticipated to be a coronation for the reigning premiers who were playing their first game in front of their home fans since grand final day.
Other results saw Carlton, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs emerge victorious, with the Demons prevailing in a thriller against the GWS Giants.
Heading into round 2, we see some interesting matchups in store with the following of particular interest:
GWS Giants versus Carlton Blues
GWS Giants host their first home game of the season against a Carlton outfit who seemed defensively oriented in their win over Collingwood in last Friday night’s season opener.
The Giants played an entertaining brand of football in their away clash with one of the leading premiership fancies, Melbourne and nearly left Casey Fields with the four points, going down by 6 points. Alicia Eva starred for the Giants with 14 disposals and 13 tackles in the contest.
GWS will be keen to continue that form but won’t find it that easy against a Carlton team filled with stars.
That being said, at $2.57 for a home victory, the Giants present good value in this one.
Best Bet: GWS to win @ $2.57
Melbourne Demons versus Adelaide Crows
The two premiership favourites entering the season do battle this Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields.
The Crows will be keen to register their first points for the season but will find their quest to do so even harder now with co-captain and last year’s league best and fairest Erin Phillips and Courtney Cramey set to miss the clash.
The Demons have a terrific group of ball winners led by captain Daisy Pearce and will be hard to stop in the second of back to back home matches for the club.
Expect the Demons to win in impressive fashion and continue their undefeated start to the season.
Best Bet: Melbourne to win over 15.5 points (Tri Bet) @ $2.70
In futures markets, some interesting developments took place after round 1 with Carlton instilled as the new premiership favourite at $3.75 (in from $4.50) ahead of Melbourne at $4.00. The Adelaide Crows, pre-season favourites at $3.75 are now an equal fourth favourite at $6. For leading goal kicker, Katie Brennan has moved into a $2.50 clear favourite after coming into the season a $6 chance.
