Footy season is back and we are only in the beginning of February! The AFL season may be close to two months away but now in its second season, the AFLW take centre stage with the first of seven scheduled rounds kicking off tonight at Ikon Park between traditional AFL rivals Carlton and Collingwood.
As far as betting action is concerned regarding the season, the Blues have been the team punters have been gravitating towards with 36% of outright premiership winner bets being placed on Carlton according to the TAB yesterday. They are the third favourite in premiership betting at $4.50.
Last year’s premiers the Adelaide Crows, led by Erin Phillips and Chelsea Randall are the current favourites to take out this year’s edition at $3.75 ahead of Melbourne, led by 2017 All Australian Team Captain Daisy Pearce at $4.25.
Last year’s runner-up the Brisbane Lions, are at $7.00 to go one better than last year.
With the success of last year’s inaugural AFLW season, there are plenty of betting options for punters to consider and with the players more familiar to fans this year, some of the futures markets may be of particular interest.
Last year’s winner Erin Phillips leads the AFLW Best and Fairest market at $3.00 ahead of Daisy Pearce. You can get Carlton duo Brianna Davey and Darcy Vescio at $7 and $11 respectively, with new Carlton recruit and former Lion Tayla Harris at $26.
For Leading Goal Kicker, last year’s winner Vescio is a $3 favourite to do it again, following by Adelaide’s Sarah Perkins and Erin Phillips at $4.50 and $6.00 respectively. Also at $6.00 is the Western Bulldog’s Katie Brennan.
Fan favourite Moana Hope of Collingwood is at $8.00 with star of last year’s grand final for the Brisbane Lions, Sabrina Frederick-Traub, a $12.00 chance.
Looking at Round 1 action, Carlton, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs are the clear favourites in all of their matchups this weekend.
Carlton ($1.45) v Collingwood ($2.76)
Melbourne ($1.36) v GWS ($3.18)
Adelaide ($1.41) v Brisbane ($2.94)
Western Bulldogs ($1.45) vs Fremantle ($2.76)
For this week’s action, the Carlton – Collingwood fixture is a terrific way to kick of proceedings on a Friday night and with new recruits Harris and Nicola Stevens, who makes her way from the Pies, they will be keen to put on a show in front of their home crowd at Ikon Park.
Suggested Bet: Carlton (W) 10 – 19 points @ $4.50
For the season ahead, Melbourne will be keen to atone for last year’s third place finish and with a terrific list of players led by superstar Pearce, they look a great chance for the premiership. In the individual markets, a fit and firing Katie Brennan up forward should see her right in the mix in for leading goal kicker honours and at $6.00 presents respectable value.
Suggested Bet: Melbourne – To Win the Flag @ $4.25
