Australia shorten dramatically ahead of second Test in Bangalore

Thu, Mar 2, 3:48pm by Head Editor

Preview: India v Australia – Second Test

Date and Time: Saturday March 4, 3:00pm AEDT

Venue: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

TV: Fox Sports

Not only did Australia shock India in the first Test in Pune with their 333-run win, but they also shocked the cricketing world and even the majority of Australians, who gave their side very little hope heading into the series.

Conversely, the Indians must now regroup and have 1.2 billion of their compatriots, in a cricket-mad country, expecting a quick response in Bangalore on Saturday.

The defeat was the first on home soil since November 2012 and was one that their skipper, Virat Kohli, could hardly believe.

Australia started the series as a $12 outsider but that quote has now been slashed into $2.75. India have lost just one series to Australia in the last 48 years but are now only slight favourites to keep that run going at $2.25.

The drawn series may be value at $4, given there is rain expected in Bangalore over day’s two, three and four of the Test.

The odds for the second Test also reflect just how much of a shock the opening match result was. Australia started as a $5 shot in Pune but are now at $4.25 with India at $1.88, out from the $1.67 they were before a ball was bowled in the opening Test.

WATCH: Our Preview of Second Test

The battle of the world’s top two Test batsmen is clearly being won by the Aussie skipper at the moment, Steve Smith scored a brilliant hundred in the second innings, a knock that is being called his best ever.

He’s at $5 to reach triple figures again in the first innings of this Test, $3.50 favourite to top score for Australia in that innings and $2.20 to reach 50.

Kohli is still coming to terms with the fact that he made his first Test duck for over two and a half years in the first innings and the 13 he made in the second innings wasn’t much better.

The punters seem to have forgiven him though, he is at $3 to top score, $2 to make 50 and $4.50 for a ton, all of which are first innings quotes.

Such has been the backlash to the result of the opening Test that even the curator in Pune hasn’t been spared. I must admit that the pitch did look at least four days old on day one, but hey, welcome to India.

ICC match referee Chris Broad handed down his official verdict which was a “poor” rating. This means that the curator and his many staff will be under the pump to produce a stunning wicket in Bangalore and the early signs are that it looks green, which should suit the Aussie fast bowlers.

However, this could be a classic case of ‘smoke and mirrors’, with the Indians desperate to bounce back and hoping that the Australian coaching staff will be tempted to play an extra quick.

One of the spinners who wasn’t even assured of getting picked ahead of the series, was Steve O’Keefe. He was absolutely brilliant, returning the best Test figures ever by an Australian on the subcontinent, 12/47.

He’s at $3.50 to back up his performance here and take the most first innings wickets.

Australia were winless in their past 11 Test on Indian soil before the outstanding victory in Pune, if they make it two from 13, the government may have to create another public holiday in honour of the 11 players.

Here’s an interesting stat to leave you with, Australia actually has a winning record against India at this venue. The nations have played five Tests here, with the tourists saluting twice, losing once, and playing out two draws.

Australia’s two wins at this venue have come by a big margin, 8 wickets (in 1998) and 217 runs (in 2004).

Suggested Bet: Mitchell Starc for most first innings wickets: $3.75
