Big guns tipped to advance to FA Cup semi-finals

Fri, Mar 16, 10:41am by Staff Writer

Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea are favourites to continue their FA Cup journey after this weekend as the Premier League big guns look for a consolation prize from this season.

Manchester City can only look out as the FA Cup enters the quarterfinals after suffering a shock defeat to League One side Wigan Athletic in the fifth round.

Tottenham Hotspur will prepare for their quarterfinal at Swansea City amid serious concerns over star playmaker Harry Kane’s ankle injury.

The FA Cup is Spurs’ best chance to end their decade-long wait for a trophy with Liverpool and defending champion Arsenal already eliminated. Swansea, meanwhile, is fighting for its spot in the EPL.

Spurs, who have risen to third on the EPL ladder after a comprehensive, 4-1 win over Bournemouth last week, are Sportsbet’s $1.45 favourite to advance, with $7.50 for Swansea and $4.20 for a draw.

After being knocked out of the Champions League in the last-16 stage, United will be looking for a morale-boosting win over Brighton.

United lost 2-1 to Sevilla this week to break a three-match winning streak and is has effectively lost its hopes of catching home-town rival City in the EPL.

Jose Mourinho is expected to field his strongest side against Brighton in a bid to join the final four and his side in the overwhelming favourite at just $1.25 for the win, $11 for a loss and $5 for a draw.

Despite a recent show of good form, Leicester City enter their home match against Chelsea as the underdogs.

Leicester thrashed West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in the EPL last weekend and have travelled to Spain for a midweek training camp to give itself the best possible preparation form the match.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will have plenty to prove after dropping out of the Champions League with a dismal 3-0 loss to Barcelona this week.

Chelsea is the $2.10 frontrunner to claim the win this weekend, with a sporting $3.40 for Leicester and $3.40 for a draw.

Wigan will be hoping it has another big FA Cup performance in reserve when it hosts Southampton courtesy of a 1-0 win over Manchester City ion the fifth round.

Wigan is second in League One, and while Southampton is at the opposite end of the table to City, Athletic will need another step up in class to ensure a win.

Southampton, which reached the FA Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 with a 2-1 win over in the last round, is paying $2.10 to advance, with $3.50 for Wigan and $3.30 for a draw.

In an abbreviated Premier League, meanwhile, Liverpool can take possession of third spot on the ladder with a win over Watford.

The Reds trail Tottenham by just one point heading into round 31 and should have little trouble dispatching the 10th-placed Watford and overtake Spurs, even if it’s only until the round is completed.

Liverpool is on a miserly $1.15 to take the three points at Anfield, with a whopping $15 for Watford and $7.50 for a draw.

Suggested Bet: Take Tottenham to win 2-0: $6
