With the two favourites to win the Champions League both knocked out in the quarter finals, the tournament is now wide open. Barcelona and Manchester City had been in pole position, but both suffered dramatic defeats to fall away. The semi finals will see Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich and Liverpool face Roma.
Real Madrid booked their place in the semi-finals in the most incredible circumstances with a late winner over Juventus. A commanding 3-0 first leg lead was surrendered by Real as they capitulated at the Bernabeu. Juventus secured the three goal lead they needed to send the game to extra time before controversy rocked the game as a late penalty saw Real progress. The injury time winner from Cristiano Ronaldo was overshadowed by Gianluigi Buffon’s aggressive reaction to the penalty decision.
Despite the late drama Real now stand as favourites to lift the trophy at $2.80.
Their semi final opponents, Bayern Munich, battled past a resolute Sevilla side who put the Germans under immense pressure over the two legs. A 2-1 win in Spain was followed by a goalless draw in Munich to send them through. With the Bundesliga already wrapped up, they are able to focus on bringing home European silverware. Bayern are only just edged out by Real as they stand at $3.
Liverpool have a long and proud European record that has not been reflected in recent years as the club has struggled to meet past heights. They rose to the occasion, however, as they outclassed Manchester City in the quarter finals. Liverpool have moved to $2.88 after being so dominant against City and being drawn against Roma meaning they avoided the two most difficult opponents. With Mohammed Salah in incredible goal scoring form, Liverpool are a real threat to win a sixth European Cup/ Champions League as he returns to take on the club he left at the start of the season.
Italian club Roma produced the shock of the quarter finals as they came back from 4-1 down to favourites Barcelona to advance on away goals. The star-studded Barcelona side had no answers for the battling performance put in by Roma’s players. They were underestimated in that second leg and it will be at Liverpool’s peril if they do the same. Although they stand at $7.50 to win the tournament they could again spring a surprise to reach the final.
The semi finals will commence from Tuesday 24th April (GMT).
