A brilliant cross from 17-year-old Chelsea striker Callum Hudson-Odoi set up Pedro for a classy finish in the fifth minute, which proved to be the winner for English Premier League club Chelsea, in their pre-season contest against Perth Glory at Optus Stadium
The contest was seen by a record crowd of 55,522 fans at Perth’s brand-new $1.8 billion stadium and the fans weren’t disappointed with the home side, who battled bravely under new coach Tony Popovic.
The Blues also played under a new boss for the first time with Maurizio Sarri taking the reins for the 2016/17 Premier League Champions.
While French World Cup heroes N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud didn’t take the pitch, the visitors line-up still included stars Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Alonso, David Luiz and new signing Jorginho.
Perth recruit and former Socceroo Jason Davidson started his career in the West well, while fellow recruit Fabio Ferreira made some penetrating runs early in the second half. It must be said that Glory shot-stopper Liam Reddy was arguably the host’s best player, pulling off a series of great saves.
The English club’s attention now turns to Inter Milan, with Sarri’s charges taking on the Italian giants in Nice, France on Saturday.
The Glory have two weeks to prepare for a blockbuster FFA Cup Round of 32 fixture against A-League Champions Melbourne Victory, who are equal favourites at $5 to defend their title this season.
Chelsea are fourth favourite at $12 to secure their second EPL title in three years, while Perth are on the seventh line of betting ($10) to lift the A-League trophy.
Meanwhile, the International Champions Cup continues in America on Thursday morning (AEST) with Bayern Munich slight favourites ($2.25) to defeat Juventus ($2.75) in Philadelphia.
