City stretch their lead at the summit after defeating their neighbours

Mon, Dec 11, 4:12pm by Head Editor

A fiery Manchester derby ended with the blue half of the city on top. City stretched their lead at the top of table out to 11 points ahead of rivals Manchester United.

City’s victory also saw them enter the record books, after securing a 14th successive victory in the EPL this year. Although that would have just been an added bonus to the joy of beating United in front of their own fans at Old Trafford.

A quick-fire end to the first half saw the sides head into the changing rooms at 1-1. As Marcus Rashford brought United back on level terms following David Silva’s opener. Silva had been a doubt for the tie from injury but bounced back to make the starting line-up.

Nicolas Otamendi scored the all-important winner after a defensive lapse from United striker Romelo Lukaku. The City defender gladly taking the opportunity after a miscued clearance.

Despite their best efforts, United could not find a way to draw level again. With City goalkeeper, Ederson, producing a fine string of saves in the closing stages.

United fans and indeed, Jose Mourinho, will point to the denied penalty decision which would have given them the chance to make it 2-2. Ultimately though City had to just too much desire compared to the home side.

Pep Guardiola was reluctant to admit that the title race is now over, but City have shortened to $1.04 from $1.11 in the aftermath of the match.

United, meanwhile, shortened as well to $9.50 from $10 and will know that whilst the 11-point gap poses difficulties, it is not an impossible task.

With both United’s and City’s rivals struggling this weekend the title race appears to be a two-horse race. Liverpool dropped points against Everton, whilst Arsenal failed to win at Southampton, and Chelsea fell to a surprise loss at West Ham.
