Some of the top Super Bowl contenders have got off to fast starts in the NFL season but are not among the biggest favorites in Week 4. Two teams are favoured by more than a touchdown, but that doesn’t include the undefeated Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
The two biggest underdogs of the round are Cleveland and Los Angeles, having won just one game each this season. The Rams ($3.85) are a 7.5-point underdog when they travel to Arizona ($1.28) while the Browns ($3.75) are given the same line when they head to the nation’s capital to play the Redskins ($1.29).
Interestingly, there are three teams with 2-1 records who are getting a helping hand of more than three points. These teams are the Kansas City Chiefs who are given a 5-point head-start ($2.96) when they travel to Pittsburgh ($1.42). The Oakland Raiders ($2.52) are given 3.5 points by Sportsbet when they travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens ($1.55).
The fourth week of action began on Friday morning (AEST) with the Dolphins travelling to Cincinatti. The Bengals saluted by 22 points to seven after leading from wire to wire, which we correctly predicted.
Green Bay and Philadelphia will put their feet up with the first bye of the season, here are the three best bets for Week 4 of the 2016 NFL season:
Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars , Wembley Stadium, London, UK – 12:30am AEST, Monday 3 October
The winless Jaguars will be hoping that a change of continent will change their fortunes. They did defeat the Bills in a dramatic game by 34-31 at England’s most famous stadium last season. The Colts will technically be the road team here but shouldn’t have too many problems with the cellar dwelling Jags.
Indianapolis are a playoff contender and are a level ahead of the Jaguars. Indianapolis has beaten Jacksonville in six of their last seven meetings, and they only need to win by a field goal to cover the line.
Jacksonville was expected to be much improved in 2016, but they are headed towards another losing season, having won no more than five games in any of the past five years.
Seattle Seahawks @ New York Jets, MetLife Stadium, New Jersey – 4:00am AEST, Monday 3 October
The Jets will still be stinging after last week’s brutal loss to the Chiefs but are legitimate contenders for one of the two AFC wild-card spots. This Sunday they will be looking to even get their season record back to 2-2 when they host a banged-up Seattle Seahawks.
The Seahawks are dealing with an early season injury crisis with several key players injured. Starting running back Thomas Rawls could be out a month with a leg injury while quarter back Russell Wilson is expected to play with a knee and ankle injury. Seattle might be the best team in the NFC when healthy but they are far short of that at the moment.
The last time the Seahawks went into a game when Wilson was under an injury cloud was the week 2 loss against the Rams where they failed to score a touchdown. Last week he suffered a sprained MCL so he might have trouble moving the ball against a tough New York defensive front.
Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is due for a bounce-back performance after throwing six interceptions in Week 3 and I’m backing him to do just that here.
BEST BET: Jets to win: $2.18
Denver Broncos @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay – 7:05am AEST Monday 3 October
The defending Super Bowl champs are proving that life without Peyton Manning is just fine, continuing to look as good as they did last season. That shouldn’t stop when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who are 1-2 on the season.
Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston may well have some sleepless nights in the lead-up to this match. The Broncos have the best defence in the league and have already forced Cam Newton, Andrew Luck and Andy Dalton to under-perform in the opening three weeks.
Winston threw four interceptions when Arizona’s defence forced him to make quick decisions in Week 2, and Sunday could be the same story. The Buccaneers picked up their only win when they defeated the Atlanta Falcons in week one, with no pressure on the quarterback.
There’s no reason to believe Winston will have any more success against the AFC’s top front seven. After defeating the Cincinnati Bengals by 12 points on the road, winning in Tampa Bay shouldn’t be too difficult. Broncos to win.
BEST BET: Broncos to win: $1.60
MULTI OF THE WEEK: Combining all of the below for $6.55 at Sportsbet
Colts to win by more than 2 points: $1.88
Jets to win: $2.18
Broncos to win $1.60
