Doomben Saturday December 30 – Preview, Best Bets and Odds

Fri, Dec 29, 9:22am by Staff Writer

Brisbane racing is at Doomben on Saturday. The rail is out one-metre and the track was a heavy-8 at acceptances with only little rain forecast leading into race day.

The Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) has a capacity field with Pierata ($3.30) the early favourite for the race. He’s had the two runs at Doomben this campaign with an impressive win first-up before a strong effort when second to Whypeeo ($4) in the Listed Gold Edition (1200m) two weeks ago. He’s drawn wide in barrier 13 on Saturday and at present he’s the current 3YO Magic Millions Guineas pre-race favourite.

Whypeeo has won the four from six career starts and will jump from barrier nine while Shogun Sun ($9) finished third in the Gold Edition and also finished second to Whypeeo at the Gold Coast earlier this year which came after a surprise win at Randwick where he beat the highly talented Addictive Nature.

Capital Gain ($8.50) is a Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) winner and he’s had good support for Saturday as has Dinnigan ($31) – at long odds – for Waterhouse/Bott as she looks for her maiden win at her fourth career start. Sparky Lad ($15) is coming off a last start win, Super Ex ($23) put three straight together last campaign and he’s second-up on Saturday while Femme Fireball ($21) has won three-in-a-row coming into this and is one of many chances in an open race.

Cabeza De Vaca ($2.80) was a brave second to Crack Me Up in the Group 2 Villiers (1600m) and he’s the solid favourite for the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m). Josh Parr’s ride on Cabeza De Vaca featured heavily in the stewards report with the question being asked as to why he set such a solid tempo. He jumps from barrier nine on Saturday with Stephen Baster to ride. Hopfgarten ($6.50) is a stalwart who bobs up every now and then – admittedly having contested some good races in his career – and he leads a contingent of Queensland horses like Cantbuybetter ($5.50), Sheiswhatsheis ($7.50) and Zahspeed ($6) who are racing well and given a chance according to the markets.

The Group 3 Machlachlan Stakes (1200m) sees the two-year-olds do battle, some en route to the Magic Millions riches in a fortnight. Orcein ($3) was scratched from Randwick by Chris Waller to run here and he’s the favourite for the race. Witherspoon ($6) was third to Outback Barbie last start while Crocket ($6.50) was second to Ef Troop but beaten over 5L.

The last race of the day is a Listed set weights plus penalties for the fillies and mares with a full field set to line up. Ghisoni ($4) is an interesting runner as she has her tenth race start and third for the year in what has been an injury-riddled career for the once boom filly. Her last start was on Geelong Cup day when second to Deja Blue beaten in a photo finish but where the top six finished within half a length of each other.

Zestful ($7.50) is a last start winner which broke a long run of outs. Candika ($7.50) is first-up from a break with four wins and two placings from nine runs at this track. Chris Waller has sent up Invincibella ($8) and Zumbelina ($19), the latter drawing wide in barrier 18 while All Over Bosanova ($9) and Kinshachi ($9) – stable mate to the favourite – are the only other runners under double figure odds in a open race to wrap up a quintessential Brisbane day of racing.

Suggested Bets: Chris Waller has sent up Orcein ($3, race 3, number 4) in preference for a race at Randwick and it could give the Snitzel colt his first career win. He’s been placed against some handy types in his first two starts and with even luck from a good draw, will be running on.  If Cabeza De Vaca’s ($2.80, race 8, number 3) last run hasn’t taken anything out of him, he’ll be mighty hard to beat on Saturday.
