England has taken a one-nil advantage against India in their best-of-five match Test series.
It was an enthralling Test match in every sense of the word, with England completing a tense 31-run victory on the fourth morning at Edgbaston.
England is $1.25 to win the series at Sportsbet, with India now $6.50 outsiders. The draw is paying $7.50.
The hosts are $9 to win the series 5-0, with the shortest-priced correct score option of 4-1 at $4.
The teams were locked in a close match after the first innings, with Joe Root scoring 80 runs in a 287-run first innings for the hosts.
India’s Virat Kohli was a star with the bat, top-scoring with 149 runs as they made 274 runs, trailing by 15 runs at the innings change.
England posted a score of 180 runs in the second innings, with Ben Curran scoring 63 runs.
Ishant Sharma was the best for the visitors with the ball in the second innings, netting five wickets for only 51 runs.
India batted in the second innings with a target of 194 runs. At the beginning of day four, they had dropped five wickets and were 84 runs short of victory.
The sixth ball of the day from James Anderson was fruitful as he bowled Dinesh Karthik, before Ben Stokes dismissed Virat Kohli for 51 runs and Mohammed Shami for a duck in a match-changing spell.
Hardik Pandya was caught at first slip off another great ball from Stokes who finished with figures of 4-40 in the second innings.
Captain Joe Root’s decision to regularly change the bowling line-up in the second innings was fruitful, with Stokes striking twice in his first over.
The match fluctuated to favour both teams at times, in a vintage match of Test cricket.
The series now moves to Lord’s for the second test starting on Thursday evening Australian time.
India need a win if they want a realistic chance of keeping their hopes of winning the series alive, but are $2.85 outsiders at Sportsbet to do so.
England are $2 favourites to win the match, with the draw priced at $4.50.
India’s top runscorer in the first innings at Edgbaston, Virat Kohli, is the shortest price batsman to repeat his efforts at $3 in the second Test.
For England, captain Joe Root ($3.40) and former captain Alastair Cook ($4.50) lead the market.
James Anderson is said to figure in the wickets again, priced at $3.75 to take the most wickets for England in the first innings.
Anderson looks a short-price after only taking four wickets in the first Test, but has taken 94 wickets at the ground, the most of any in his career thus far.
