The 2018-19 English Premier League season resumes this weekend, with the headline fixture featuring reigning champions Manchester City’s visit to Arsenal on Monday morning.
Newcastle United versus Tottenham Hotspur
Saturday, 11 August 2018 at 9.30pm AEST at St James’ Park
Newcastle’s Premier League return last season under coach Rafael Benitez was a success as the Geordie’s finished 10th on 44 points.
The Magpies’ first home game of the season is against Tottenham, who are aiming to improve upon their third-placed finish a season ago.
Spurs are $2 favourites to win the match at Sportsbet, with the hosts priced at $3.75. The draw is paying $3.40.
Tottenham are astonishingly yet to make a transfer in the market this season, which is somewhat unprecedented at this time of the season.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino is viewed as one of the best coach’s in the Premier League, but his unwavering faith in his squad may be a sign of resignation that catching Manchester City and Liverpool this season will be a challenge.
It is a similar story for Benitez, with Newcastle’s biggest signing of the summer being the £9.5 million transfer of Yoshinori Muto from German club Mainz.
They have brought in Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder Kenedy and Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion in a direct loan swap for Dwight Gayle.
Tottenham finished atop the standings in the International Champions Club friendly tournament, fielding a fix of youth and experienced players who did not feature deep in the World Cup.
Tottenham have won four of their past six matches against Newcastle and three of four at St James’ Park.
The first match of the season is always a tricky one to predict and ordinarily Tottenham would be priced far shorter than they are on Saturday.
Harry Kane will feature for the first time this season for Tottenham after being a prominent goal scorer last term.
Spurs should edge this match narrowly by a 1-0 scoreline.
Best bet- Tottenham Hotspur to win at $1.90
Southampton versus Burnley
Sunday, 12 August 2018 at 10.30pm AEST at St Mary’s
Mark Hughes steered Southampton narrowly away from relegation last season as the Saints finished a disappointing 17th.
They will need a significant upturn in form if they are to remain above the relegation zone this term and are presented with a golden opportunity to grab all three points on Sunday against Burnley.
The Saints are $1.72 favourites to win the match, with Burnley priced as $4.50 outsiders. The draw is paying $3.30.
Burnley finished the 2017-18 season in an impressive seventh position, the club’s best finish in the Premier League.
Coach Sean Dyche steered his club to its first European campaign in 51 years, with the Clarets involved in UEFA Europa League qualification this week and next.
They have made numerous signing in the off-season, including former Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson and ex-England international Joe Hart.
By contrast, the Saints have been dormant in the transfer market, with the loss of Dusan Tadic to Ajax certain to be a blow.
What makes this match intriguing from a betting perspective is that Burnley will be playing a European qualifier in Turkey on Thursday night in Istanbul.
Their match against Istanbul Basaksehir is sure to take its toll both physically and mentally, as Turkey is one of the most challenging countries to play European football in.
The Saints should win this match to nil against a weary Clarets side who will certainly have one eye on their return fixture against Basaksehir at Turf Moor next week.
Best bet- Southampton to win to nil at $2.75
Arsenal versus Manchester City
Sunday, 12 August 2018 at 1am AEST at the Emirates Stadium
The post-Arsene Wenger era for Arsenal officially begins when they host Manchester City on Monday morning.
Former Paris St-Germain coach Unai Emery is at the helm for the Gunners, who will be eager to return to the top four and playing European football.
Their opponents, Manchester City, are the favourites to win this season’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League and as expected, are $1.91 to begin their season with a win.
The Gunners are $3.40 outsiders, with the draw paying $3.60.
City were victorious 2-0 in the FA Community Shield last Sunday against Chelsea and once again look slick in attack.
Pep Guardiola has strengthened his squad, with the signing of Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez his most high-profile addition.
Emery will want to get the Gunners off to a solid defensive start, with his defensive structures his trademark.
Arsenal can sneak a draw in this match, despite losing their last three matches against City.
Best bet- Arsenal and Manchester City to draw at $3.60
