Atletico Madrid remain the favourite to lift the Europa League trophy this season and with it book a spot in next season’s Champions League. Although there are several sides with lots of experience in European competition who could be a threat to their chances.
The Spaniards cruised to a comfortable 5-1 aggregate win in the last Round over FC Copenhagen to set up a clash with Lokomotiv Moscow. Madrid will be confident of advancing as they stand at $3.25 to win the tournament compared to Lokomotiv at $91. A tricky away leg in the Russian capital, however, will be a huge test for the Spanish side.
In a season where they have underachieved, Arsenal still hold hope in the Europa League. They are well off the pace in the EPL, out of the FA Cup and were comprehensively beaten in the League Cup Final. Indeed, wining the Europa League could be their only way to secure Champions League football for next season.
Priced at $6, Arsenal are firmly in the running to lift the trophy, although they face Italian giants AC Milan in the Round of 16. They are in a similar poor run of form though as they sit 7th in Serie A and only stand at $15 to win the Europa.
Borussia Dortmund are 19 points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga so can focus plenty of their energy on the Europa League. The Germans are priced at $7 and are certainly capable of winning the tournament for the first time.
Sitting in 3rd place in Serie A, Lazio will be aiming to add some silverware to their season. They face Dynamo Kiev ($51) so should advance to the next Round but they will be tested against some of the bigger clubs. They stand at $10 as they look to Ciro Immobile to fire them to victory.
Red Bull Leipzig could be the surprise package of the Europa League this year. They recorded an impressive victory over Napoli in the last Round, advancing on the away goals rule after a 3-3 draw on aggregate. Their performance in the 3-1 win away from home suggests that they have the capability of causing a few more upsets. They are priced at $11.
Rounding out the remainder of the draw, the clubs are all in close contention to win the Europa League. With numerous sides with lots of European pedigree still left in the tournament it will be an exciting Round of 16.
Sporting Lisbon, Marseille and Lyon all stand at $13. A French side has never won the competition whilst Sporting are aiming to emulate their Portuguese rivals, Porto, by lifting the trophy.
Although, Athletic Bilbao are struggling this season in La Liga, they round out the most likely winners of the Europa league. Sitting 12th in their domestic league they need the boost that comes with a fine run in European competition. They stand at $19.
