FFA Cup Round of 16: Match Day 1 Preview

Tue, Aug 21, 8:29am by Head Editor

The Round of 16 of Australia’s premier knockout soccer competition, the FFA Cup, begins on Tuesday night with four matches across three different states.

Having defeated Wellington Phoenix in the Round of 32, Bentleigh Greens are the story of the FFA Cup so far and are looking to keep their fairy-tale run alive when they head to the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, to take on Broadmeadow Magic.

Despite missing out on the NPL Victoria Premiership to Heidelberg United, the Greens ($1.72) are favoured to progress to the final eight.

Broadmeadow have lost two NPL NSW games in a row without scoring but with ex-Newcastle Jets striker James Virgili up front, they aren’t without a chance at $3.50.

Some 160 kilometres south of that contest, Melbourne Victory are set to take the pitch in the west of Sydney, against the APIA Leichardt Tigers.

The Tigers are still smarting from their qualifying final loss in the league to Sydney United 58 on Saturday, that came in penalties.

Victory progressed to this stage of the tournament with a 1-0 win over fellow A-League side Perth Glory last month thanks to a goal from New Zealand International Kosta Barbarouses.

The A-League Champions are $1.40 to move through to the next stage of the tournament they won in 2015 while the hosts are out at $5.50.

Down in the north-west of Melbourne, Avondale FC are solid favourites at $1.45 to be too strong for Tasmanian league leaders Devonport City ($5).

Former Liverpool youth product Chris Oldfield will line up between the sticks for Avondale and he’ll have to be on his game considering that Devonport are coming off a 7-1 win over Northern Rangers on the weekend.

FFA Cup holders Sydney FC are the shortest priced favourite of the night when they travel north to take on Cairns FC.

The match is a reunion for new Sky Blues Boss Steve Corica, who will be coaching against his 17-year-old nephew Harrison Corica, who is having a great season in midfield for the NPL Queensland outfit.

Sydney are at just $1.04 to qualify for the quarter finals while Cairns are out at $26 for what would be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.
