Georgia native Russell Henley clinches the final place at Masters

Mon, Apr 3, 2:58pm by Head Editor

Russell Henley played one of the most important final rounds of his career on Monday (AEST), shooting a 7-under 65 that gave him a three-shot win that booked him the 96th and last spot for this week’s opening major of the year, the Masters.

The 27-year-old, who grew up just a two-hour drive from the Augusta National Golf Club, – in Macon, Georgia – started the final round four shots behind overnight leader Sung Kang of Korea.

It will be the fourth time that the 117th ranked player in the world will tee up at one of the world’s most famous courses, and he’s coming in hot, after he made 10 birdies in his final round at the Golf Club of Houston, and never went more than two holes without a birdie.

It was the American’s Henley third PGA Tour career win, and his first since a playoff victory over Rory McIlroy in the 2014 Honda Classic. He was in danger of missing the Masters for the second straight year until winning the Houston Open, the only way into Augusta National at this point.

Three consecutive birdies from the 13th gave him the key advantage and even a bogey at the final hole could not spoil the day as Kang failed to find a birdie on the back nine.

Australia’s Aaron Baddeley finished on seven under in a tie for 15th while Danny Lee was a shot back at six under and 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy was a shot further back at five under.

World number three – Australia’s Jason Day – has been practicing all weekend at the famed layout, hopeful his mother’s condition in her cancer fight will allow him to play in the Masters. He’s considered the best Aussie chance, at $21 with Sportsbet.

Stay tuned to as we count down towards the first major of 2017.
