Graham Arnold firms into $2.75 to be named Socceroos boss

Tue, Dec 19, 12:15pm by Staff Writer

The search for the next manager of the Socceroos continues, with Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold the firm favourite at $2.75 to take the helm of the national side.

Speculation was rife last week that Arnold had been offered the position of Socceroos manager, something when he denied in the media.

Arnold’s record with Sydney FC has been simply outstanding, guiding the Sky Blues to a championship in 2016-17 and more recently winning the FFA Cup.

Arnold was an assistant coach to Guus Hiddink in the famous 2006 World Cup team that played so outstandingly in Germany.

The famous Dutchman Hiddink has held many posts throughout his esteemed career and will be an advisor to South Korea at next year’s World Cup in Russia.

‘Aussie Guus’ as Australian fans affectionately know him is $7.50 to become the next Socceroos manager and is a popular choice with fans.

New Western Sydney Wanderers coach Josep Gombau is third favourite to win the Socceroos job at $10.

Gombau has recently begun a coaching role with the Wanderers, guiding them to their first win under his tenure last weekend with a 2-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners.

He would be a surprise appointment given the wealth of other, more credentialed international managers available for the position.

Former Wanderers coach Tony Popovic is a $13 chance to succeed Ange Postecoglou at Sportsbet.

Popovic left his post at Western Sydney on the even of the 2017-18 season to pursue an opportunity with Turkish team Karabukspor.

Just three days ago, Popovic was sacked from that role after the team underperformed all season and sit bottom of the Turkish league.

Popovic’s newfound availability makes him an intriguing prospect and he shouldn’t be under-estimated in this market.

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat has made no secret of his desire to coach internationally and the opportunity to coach the Socceroos at the World Cup would be a dream come true for the Victory manager.

At $13 he is an outsider for the post, given the wealth of other Australian and international managers he has to contend with.

At $17, former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti would be a coup for the Socceroos.

The Italian has coached some of the world’s best club teams to success, but has yet to try his hand at international football.

With speculation that he is set to return to Chelsea in the English Premier League, Ancelotti is an outsider for the Socceroos position.
