Hillary Cilnton’s resounding win in the opening presidential debate has seen the former first lady firm into $1.44 for the US presidency with the election just seven weeks away.
Her opponent Donald Trump had made solid gains in recent weeks, with some pollsters putting the difference between the two candidates at just two points ahead of Monday’s first debate.
That had seen Trump firm into $2.60, with Clinton drifted out to $1.55, with the momentum suddenly switching to the Republican candidate.
But put head to head in front of an estimated national TV audience of 100 million, Clinton edged clear in a fiery and at times personal debate.
Trump questioned whether Clinton had the stamina for the presidency and challenged her record of dealing with Islamic terrorists, while Clinton pointed to Trump’s failure to disclose tax returns as well as his previously derogatory comments about women as well as accusing him of racism.
Clinton’s ability to rationally debate Trump, who at times looked to be lacking composure, made her look decidedly more presidential.
Not only did she re-establish her clear favouritism among bookmakers, but she also put a stamp on the next debate, which she is now $1.75 to win.
“Hillary showed what a seasoned pro she is on the debate stage and really walked this with ease. The odds of the US having their first female President are looking much shorter now,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Will Byrne.
