India avoid Test series whitewash against England

India got on the board in their best-of-five Test series against England after winning the third Test at Trent Bridge by 203 runs.

The result ensures that England won’t complete a series whitewash, with the result a surprise given India’s heavy defeat in the second Test.

The visitors are $2.75 to win the fourth Test in Southampton starting on Thursday, with England $1.95 favourites. The draw is paying $5.35 at Sportsbet.

Their third Test win was only India’s seventh in England. After the first innings, England managed only 161 runs, with India’s total of 329 runs more than doubling the visitors’ tally.

The England first innings stumbled after the half century, with two wickets in as many balls dismissing Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook Jos Buttler top-scored for the hosts with 39 runs in an otherwise dour performance.

Virat Kohli fell just three runs short of a century, dismissed for 97 runs after facing 152 balls. Ajinkya Rahane added 81 runs for India, how had a commanding lead at the innings break.

India needed less than three overs to wrap up play on the fifth day, and have clawed back from a two game deficit to trail 2-1 in the series, with two matches to play.

Joe Root is the shortest priced of the England players to top score with the bat in the first innings. He is priced at $3.75, with Alastair Cook priced at $5.

Virat Kohli leads the way for India at $2.88, with Cheteshwar Pujara ($4.50) and Hamuna Vihari ($6) the next two shortest priced.

James Anderson is the favourite to claim man of the match honours at $10, with Joe Root ($10) and Stuart Broad ($11) the other Englishmen that are sure to feature.

England is $1.30 to win the series and will need a win in either Southampton or the fifth Test at the Oval to claim series honours.

India is $6 to claim an unlikely comeback victory. The draw is $6.50.
