International Champions Cup: Update and Preview

Thu, Aug 2, 11:50am by Staff Writer

The International Champions Cup features 18 of Europe’s best football teams competing in matches across 23 venues in the United States, Europe and Asia.

This weekend’s fixtures are headlined by Real Madrid taking on Juventus at FedExField, Maryland.

Real are winless in their pre-season campaign thus far, but are priced at $2.10 to defeat Juventus on Sunday.

The Italian champions are $2.80 to win the match at Sportsbet, with the draw paying $3.40.

Real Madrid was surprisingly beaten by a sluggish Manchester United team 2-1 in Miami on Wednesday.

Goals to Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera set up the victory for United, their first of the pre-season.

New Juventus recruit Cristiano Ronaldo is not taking part in the current pre-season tour, which has featured a win against Bayern Munich and a penalty shootout against Benfica.

Barcelona concludes a disappointing pre-season campaign when they play AC Milan in Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon.

Barca are $2.20 favourites to win the match, but on current form, AC Milan are worthy of consideration.

The Serie A side are paying $2.63 to win and despite losing both of their matches during this year’s International Champions Cup, have the squad depth to test Barcelona.

Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund have produced the best results thus far, with two wins and a penalty shootout loss each placing them atop the standings with seven points.

English Premier League clubs Arsenal and Liverpool make up the top four, with the three Spanish teams in the competition, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid making up three of the bottom five placed team.

Arsenal and Chelsea clashed in Dublin on Thursday morning with an early Kevin Rudiger goal cancelled out by a late equaliser to Alexandre Lacazette.

The ensuing penalty shootout was won by the Gunners, who enjoyed mixed success on their tour of Singapore, beating Paris Saint Germain and losing to Atletico Madrid.

The Blues are $1.91 to win the match, in a rare home fixture for sides in the tournament.

Lyon are paying $3.40 and unless Chelsea rest a number of players from this weekend’s FA Community Shield match against Manchester City, should be too strong for the French side.
