In the first week of Round 20’s split round, Saturday night saw ladder leader Sydney FC head to AAMI Park to do battle with third placed Melbourne City in what was expected to be a closely fought contest.
After 90 minutes it was anything but with Sydney flexing its muscles in a dominant 4-0 victory to further stretch its position at the top of the league standings.
Brazilian import Bobo converted a penalty in the 32nd minute to open the scoring tally for the Sky Blues before a brilliant strike from teammate Milos Ninkovic doubled their lead nearing half-time in the 43rd minute.
When Bobo successfully directed his header into the back of City’s net in the 65th minute to make it 3-0, he had now scored 20 goals for the season. A clean finish from Adrian Mierzejewski in the 79th minute was the finishing blow in a clinical performance from the reigning premiers.
Already a clear favourite in outright betting, Sydney FC have shortened further in the market and are now $1.66 to go back-to-back. They were $1.72 heading into the round.
The comprehensive defeat sees Melbourne City drift slightly from $6.50 to $7.50 for the title.
The other games in the split-round included another fixture at AAMI Park, and like Saturday night the home side wasn’t able to get the job done with Melbourne Victory losing 2-1 to visitors Brisbane Roar.
Brisbane were able to get to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Massimo Maccarone (7’) and Brett Holman in the 28th minute, which the Victory were unable to rein in. A James Troisi goal in the 83d minute was able to add some respectability to an underwhelming Victory performance.
Sunday night saw the rescheduled Round 7 game between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix take place and the Phoenix may have wished for the reschedule to have not taken place at all. The Phoenix travelled to ANZ Stadium and were thoroughly outclassed in their 4-0 defeat.
